i finally got my new 390 in my 1966 f250 4x4! now there is something wrong with the carb, it seems to running lean! i can only drive it down the road with the choke half to 3/4 closed! i dont know much about the autolite , but i did go thru and cleaned it only to end up with it acting the same! if any of you guys are a guru at these can you give me a little info before i go and buy a new holley? thanks again!
Not sure which Autolite carb you have, but it might be time for a rebuild. Giving the model number would help others answer your question. Rebuild kits are pretty inexpensive.

There is no need for a carb tag number, because...
One carb kit fits all Auto-Lite/Motorcraft 2V carbs installed in 1962/74 Passenger Cars & Trucks, 1966/74 Bronco's and 1969/74 Econolines.

What do you mean by that, take apart kind of go thru or spray clean the outside?!
I just ditched my autolite 2B for a Holley 500 cfm 2B, and wow does it run better.
I cleaned, adjusted, and played with the Autolite that never wanted to run just right. Mind you brand new they were not bad, but now with 50 years on the clock the Holley just blows it away. My holley starts up easier, and I have better control of the throttle.
Also most autolites were 350 cfm, and that chokes down small V8's much less a 390. I would do a 4 barrel swap if you have the money. Sometimes you can find holleys 2 barrel cheap on CL, and that would be my second choice.
it is a 4b and the guy i got it from said it was rebuilt! when i took it apart it had all new floats, seats, gaskets, and etc! thats why i cant figure it out! i have replaced the filter in the cup below the fuel pump and even put a filter on that screws directly in the flaot bowl! i adjusted a/f ratio screws out to 2 turns! i have rebuilt many edelbrocks, holleys, gm quadra-jets, rochesters, and never had this problem, well except maybe with gm quadra-jets lol! i have thought about putting a edelbrock on but thought a holley would look more natural on top of the 390, anyone have an idea what cfm i should look for? thanks for the info!

If he's having to close the choke to run it I doubt the problem is his carb is too small.

Have you checked for any vacuum leaks?
With the 390 you should be fine with anything from 600-750 cfm. If your motor is basically stock then a 600-650cfm would be good. If it is more of a performance engine then 750cfm would be good.
If you don't want the autolite carb feel free to send it my way. I like to tinker with the Autolite carbs. If you want to part with it shoot me a PM.
I put a brand new holley 600 cfm 4b on today and damn what a difference! Now it feels like a truly have a big block under the hood! Lol fordman 75 did you still want that autolite?

I'm still interested. But it'll depend on the price. Just shoot me a PM.
