Ford is saying that the truck is overboosting under load, which causes it to go into limp home mode. They claim that the overboost is the result of the new computer calibration (within the last year) for the 6.0 diesels, which was designed to prevent overboost, in combination with my Banks air filter and turbo back Banks exhaust system (still has factory cat converter). Translation: take away power so they can replace fewer turbos under warranty. They say that if I had the stock exhaust, it would not overboost and this would not happen. They have provided no 'proof' however, and this exhaust has worked fine on the truck for 3.5 years, same camper and jeep, many big grades.
Ford is NOW saying that 'any boost over 26psi will put truck into reduced power mode until key is cycled off and on', funny thing though, redline on the boost gauge is 35psi.
The service manager also told me verbally that this new 'calibration' has only been implemented in California. This makes no sense, the truck is sold worldwide, there must be a million 6.0's out there, why would they only implement it here? On top of that, I can pick about 1 out of 4 going down the street with aftermarket exhausts on them. Where are the rest of the trucks with this issue, if in fact what they are saying is true? There should be a line at the dealer.
At this point I'm not buying it, I think they see a way to deny me warranty until next month when it expires. Waiting for reply from Banks now to see what they say. If it's true, better not put their stuff on anything or it will cost you dearly. Dealer wants $3000 to put a stock exhaust back on - are you kidding me? That's a rip off. And even if I did, who's to say this issue goes away? Where's the proof Ford? I'm not spending $3k on a 5 year old truck on your 'assumption'.
Looking at all of the above, this could very well be my last Ford.............................
Overboost at 26psi is ridiculous.empty I see 27 if I hammer it.35psi is way to much.you better hope you don't peg your gauge, because you'll have all kinds of problems.the scangauge will be one of the best investments you'll make.not a gimmick, just lots of good info to be had.do a search on it,you won't be sorry.
highest i've ever NOTICED (when for some reason looking at gauge) is 28. Never seen it near 30.
I've looked at the scan gauge, but the box and website make it look like fuel mileage, volts, basic stuff. You have a diesel, what readings does it give you?
the other thing the dealer keeps trying to make me buy is C-Tane for the fuel? supposed to keep the turbo vanes from sticking and needing warranty repair? if it's so necessary and will save them warranty $, why don't they give it to you or at least sell it at cost to you? more blah blah blah......
Its 6 bucks at walmart, grey bottle, called diesel clean.I can see everything from water temp to oil temp,to intake air temp.the list is almost endless.search the forum for scangauge x gauge list.its by far the best bang for the money.also cetane boost will keep the egr system clean.still don't see how they're gonna keep boost at 26psi,when under a good load that's a common number.
i think it's impossible with my 3400lb camper and my jeep on car hauler to stay under 26psi, except if you drive at 2500rpm everywhere you go. just wait till they roll out that calibration and recal yours next trip to dealer. they don't tell you they do it either, they just do it.
You've placed the dealer in a difficult situation with the Banks equipment. So maybe we should cut them some slack if they can't find your problem with their Ford mandated procedures. Even though the Banks is probably not your problem.
My advice to you is to get that Scangage installed and learn how to set it up for coolant temp and oil temp. THAT is your most likely problem, and your dealer can't find it when not pulling the trailer. Monitor the temps, post them for us here, and maybe we can advise.
Oh, that new calibration is to protect your ***. One of the best things they have done to these trucks.
Id be charged for it,and I gaurantee they won't do it.do you have the tsb# for the flash you got?.I know the 6.4 had a lower boost flash that's playing hell with tuned trucks, but didn't hear anything on the one you're talking about.
i am unable to find the tsb for it, and they have not put it on any of the documents. it was not on my service report when they did it either. apparently it was done
as for the exhaust, it still does not relieve ford of responsibility. law says they can't deny warranty just because of the presence of aftermarket equipment, they have to prove it's the cause. so far, i've seen no proof of any kind. they could surely try to work with me to get those temps if that's the case, but they are not interested at all. and it's not the dealer, it's the Ford Engineer from corporate. that's where my issues lie with them.
fyi there's no programmer/chip/nothing like that on my truck. just the exhaust and air cleaner.
so if the temps vary too much, what's the cause of that?
I dont think it a case of being denied warranty. I think its more of a case that they are tellyou to return the truck before they can do further testing... which they can in fact do.
so far as ca being on its own emmisions that is also true. iirc there are 3 levels of calbraiton.
one is fedral one is green state and one is 50 state. you can that the tree hugers in Cali for that one
To close out this mess, here's what happened. Ford did nothing, I even paid another dealer $240 to 'diagnose' it, but of course driving empty on flat LA Freeways would not make the light come on, so they got nowhere. But at least that dealer TRIED!!! Since all hope was lost for Ford to be stand up about this, I decided to replace the MAP sensor on my own, the only sensor involved that they had not replaced. Well, I towed my jeep on the trailer up the grade out of Indio, pushing 70-75 all the way up, and NO LIGHT! I won't be 100% convinced it's fixed until I have the camper on with the jeep behind, but before, a slight grade and headwind with the jeep/trailer and it came on. Truck also seems to have it's huevos back. It towed stronger, like I remember. Hopefully this is not all 'wishful thinking', time will tell.
I still stand by the statement that the exhaust has NOTHING to do with it. My buddy just put a turbo back on his 06, same truck as mine exactly, slightly more free flowing than mine, and he has no issues at all, like the thousands of others out there with same mods that are fine.
