One site you might try is the following:
http://www.carcraft.com/howto/56459/index.html
I did a search some time ago about this and found there are a few sites out there that tell you how to do this. But once you get real guts of the system, i.e not just replacing the lock or turn-signal switch you need special tools and a lot of patience, expecially when doing it for the first time.
The correct tool can be gotten on e-bay for about $35, but where I live I can pull a column at the local automotive recyling center (not to be confused with a junk yard ) for about the same price.

What year and model column is it? While most are similar, there were differences in them over the years. While I don't feel like the GM columns are overly difficult to work on, the biggest problem is the ones we are using now have some age to them. The teflon/plastic/pot metal parts are now old and brittle. When you disassemble them you find out how expensive it gets. I agree it is usually better to just try to find a better used one.
If you are set on fixing yours. ID the model and go to the library to the old Motor or Chilton manuals.
