GM Steering columns

Got the 55 F100 set up with a 71 Comet column but I have found a Blazer tilt. Looks like a better swap and cleaner apearance. wiring is not done yet so I am open to this change. Wanna stay all Ford but......Anyone had good or bad luck with the GM columns? Budget says NO to aftermarket columns.

Input please.

Dave

I agree with the all Ford setup, i am going to do the same with my 56 M100 with a 79 Mercury car. I going to use the car column if it works out. If not I will try using a column from a 78 tilt(F150) that I have. Love the all FORD method!

I am usually for brand loyalty, This is more a case of function and appearance. After all I did use a Mopar IFS for that reason. Sure seems the more I look at it, the GM tilt is a better way to go. And Lokar makes a real nice shift cable for it.

chromedaddyo,
The GM columns will work fine. Many of the aftermarket offerings are based on that same design. There is some information on GM wire color codes in the tech articles sections at the following link.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles...ringcolumn.php
Is your Blazer tilt column from a 69-72 (no key) or 73 and later (key on column)? The former demand a pretty hefty price if they are in good condition. If you really want to go aftermarket, check out the prices on e-bay. Original 67-72 Chevy truck/Blazer tilt column ususally bring $200-300. The van tilts don't bring as much, as some modification is required to install.

"And Lokar makes a real nice shift cable for it." Sorry, I don't know what you mean here. Educate me-please?

Good Luck,

Dave,

I'd go with the GM column if you have a choice. Dress up parts are more readily available for it and wiring harnesses are usually less expensive for it.

Kent,

The Lokar shift cable is a column shift cable (somewhat like what comes on some FWD columns and others) which substitutes for the manual column linkage. I have a tilt shorty column (27 inches long) out of a FWD 86 Buick Century which has this type shift cable and have been looking at ways to adapt it for my truck...

Summit carries the cable and mount for the GM column that will be better than the linkage around my heders for $99.00 I am sure I can adapt it to a c4.
