Switch got left on and battery was dead so I jumped it and everything was good to go for 3 or 4 more starts then just click. Battery is good and solenoid just clicked. Put on new solenoid and now i have nothing, no lights, horn, radio, etc. I can jump across solenoid and it will crank and everything else comes on????? Did i buy a bad solenoid?
You hooked the solenoid up wrong.
The smaller wires that go to the big post on the solenoid should be on the side of the solenoid towards the front of the truck, sounds like you put them on the other side.
switched the wires around and still nothing. This is what i have now- large post toward the front of the truck is cable going to starter and black wire, S terminal is red wire with purple stripe, I terminal is brown wire, and large terminal facing rear is cable to positive on battery. Did I possibly smoke the solenoid having the wires switched or is this wrong?
What do you mean everything comes on when you jump the solenoid? How can you tell? When you jump the battery post of the solenoid to the 'S' terminal, the solenoid should make and the starter should turn. If that happens, then the solenoid is GOOD. I was about to say it sounds like you blew a fusible link during the swap, but it's not clear to me what you're seeing when you said everything comes on - as in your lights go on while the truck cranks with the solenoid jumped?
The cable to the battery should go on the post that is facing the front of the truck and the one for the starter should be on the post pointed toward the back of the truck.
Unless you mounted the solenoid upside down?
How are you jumping it, from big post to big post or big post to little post?
That is the way that I had it and was told i had the wires backwards. Believed that I hooked new one back up the same way as old one was. I jumped it from large post to large post.
Tested battery with a fluke. Didn't check while jumping the solenoid but put in a new battery that i had and same thing. Sorry but the rest of my vehicles are GM and I don't know for sure if I'm jumping it right. Thats why I came to you guys. Gotta say its a pretty good ol truck and enjoy driving it just wish it was 4x4.
I'm sorry but I think you misunderstood me the first time.
The cable from the battery AND the black wire need to go on the post toward the front of the truck.
That black wire is a fusible link that feeds your entire electrical system.
The cable to the starter needs to go on the side of the solenoid towards the back of the truck. (nothing else goes on this post)
You said you have the black wire on the same side of the solenoid as the starter cable, that's why you dont have any power in the truck (radio heater lights etc) except for when you put a jumper across the solenoid.
I hope I was more clear this time?
Even if the solenoid is bad if you hook the wires up properly you will still have power in the truck.
You said you have the black wire on the same side of the solenoid as the starter cable, that's why you dont have any power in the truck (radio heater lights etc) except for when you put a jumper across the solenoid.
