Starting procedure
I just got a 90 F350 w/lots of miles on it. It starts and runs good when it is warm, but just can't quite get going when it is cold. I may need new batteries. When I got it the wait to start light would go out after about 2 seconds. I put in all 8 new ZD9 glow plugs and now the light will stay on about 5 seconds when it is cold but in a heated shop. Still doesn't quite want to go. Does it help to leave the key on for 30-60 seconds before I try and start it? Will the glow plugs warm up the cylinders more than just trying to start it right after the light goes off? Thanks, Dave
Here's a little more info. When the motor is cold I put a test light on one of the glow plug wires. When the ign switch is turned on the the light will come on for about 5 seconds. Then the relay will turn the light on and off real fast for about 5 times and then nothing. No light no click. Is the controller bad? Does anybody aftermarket these? Does anybody have a part#. or do I have to go to Ford? Thanks
Oh young grasshopper panning, you must a read a top sticky post. Get er done. Its sounds like bad glow plugs. Controller is clicking so it is telling you bad glow plugs. proceedures are listed in the top thread but you will need a test light, which you have, and a battery, which you have. Attach test light to positive battery post and then the very tip of each glow plug, no a light means no a work. Replace!
BUT!! WRECK! Oh younger grasshopper....he just put 8 ZD9 Glowplugs first off, secondly....that was funny.
TO the Young Grasshopper Dave....it sounds like a controller issue, and yes these controllers can be had at autoparts stores. I have a manual push button to control my controller....i dont like the key turn. So...if glowplug a new...then the controller no a work right.

Yeah and i have been told that before when the guy had bosch so thats why i said test em anyway. Sounds more of a ground being bad or loose connections on the controller. Id bet if he ran a new wire from the negative terminal of the battery to the ground wire of the controller, it would work. Just a thought and maybe not but hey, one can hope. If the controller is bad, and uhaul is all out, i did stock up on them so PM me for one.
