Hi Crystal,
It seems I can't PM you for whatever reason. Anyway, here's what I sent to Ford customer service some time ago. I got a reply from someone in CRC stating that I should hear from a rep in the Customer Care Solutions Team. I never heard anything after that despite my repeated follow ups.

WHAT IS YOUR VEHICLE SALES OR SERVICE ISSUE?:2008 Ford Expedition and TSB 09-06-01 - squawk/rough downshift WHAT ACTION HAS YOUR DEALER TAKEN TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE?:6R75 transmission overdrive plates replaced about 40k miles ago by Manhattan Ford. Problem has returned but now includes a harsh downshift when transmission under load; i.e. towing or going uphill. WHAT ASSISTANCE ARE YOU SEEKING FROM FORD MOTOR COMPANY?:Was wondering if Ford would be willing to perform a good-will repair of transmission including replacing overdrive plates per TSB 09-06-01 with updated friction plates that do not exhibit this problem after 30-40k miles. Or, replace transmission. If agreeable, would prefer to have a different dealer service my vehicle other than Manhattan Ford as I no longer live close to that dealer. Thank you. Are you the owner of the vehicle :Yes VIN :1FMFU20568LA67651 MILEAGE : 73000 WHERE IS YOUR VEHICLE NOW : InPossession HAVE YOU CONTACTED THE DEALER :No DEALER NAME : Manhattan Ford
I've deleted my personal contact info for obvious reasons but my VIN is there for you to reference.
I recommend returning to the dealership that performed the original repair. They will be in the best position to assist you.
Crystal
That really isn't possible. I bought the truck in NYC, but now live in PA. Is there nothing Ford can do to rectify this?
Telling your other customers that we're simply not going to fix it anymore because the noise won't damage the transmission is a cop out. The overdrive friction plates are no good... why can't we get them replaced with the updated versions?

Hi amstel78,
The service manager at your dealership will be in the best position to answer that for you. Since I'm not a technician, I don't have access to repair guides or mechanical resources.
Old thread I know... just wanted to let ya'll know that my downshift squawk is back. Fix only lasted about 40k miles. I'm now out of warranty and Ford doesn't want to perform a good will repair on the vehicle. Suffice it to say, I'm not thrilled. Has it been confirmed that the noise has no detrimental affect on the rest of the transmission components?
That's what I was told by the transmission tech at my dealer. He showed me the rings that cause the problem compared to new rings out of the package, same thickness. The clutch rings develop a glaze so to speak and the noise is them slipping. He said the thickness is the same and there is no wear, just the material becoming harder over time. It's a design flaw for sure but said it won't hurt the transmission.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'm wondering though if there's anything in writing from Ford that specifically states that no transmission damage is occurring by not changing the clutch pack out? So far, everything I've seen on the matter has been limited to word of mouth.
If you have access to the TSB's from your year, there is one that talks about not changing out the packs because it will not harm the transmission. A Ford 'engineer' also confirmed this when I had my car in there for the 3rd time. They replaced it anyways, but only after I made a huge stink about it.

Now that I think about it, I may have seen a TSB out there stating such although I can't remember the TSB number now. Would you happen to recall what it is?
I don't, sorry. The tech-who I trust-said also when he called to get authorization the third time(happened at 30K, 60K and 95K) that Ford was not authorizing replacements of these under warranty as the sound did not hinder the usability of the vehicle, etc. etc.
