Transmission needs rebuild

So I just bought a 96 f250 5speed 4x4. Love the truck. It's badass. Has a 5.8 200k mileage on it. So first gear on it doesn't work. Grinds it and throws it back out. So I roll out on 2nd. 2,3,4 gears are fine. When going into 5th it'll grind and then accept it. Then while cruising in it you can hear this grinding sound from the trans. So I'm going to be keeping this truck for the long haul I wanna fix it up. Thing about rebuilding here in my town is that their are about 2 places that do it and have bad reviews. Anyone know someone who rebuilds these for a decent price near Nevada?

Which transmission is it zf-5 or m5od. Neither tranny is user friendly or cheap when it comes to rebuilding them. Sounds like a m5od. They where pretty much junk to start with. Unless you are going to keep this truck forever I would probably just pickup a used one with a bit of warranty and go on my merry way.

No manual transmission is usually user friendly to do a full revuild. They almost always require some kind of presswork.

Do plan on keeping truck. My grandpa has one since new. I always liked it. Got it for 800 bucks. Not sure which transmission I got. Thought I had the zf. What would be a wise option to go after?

It's a zf5 unless someone swapped in something different. Straight forward for a rebuild, any competent shop can handle it without issue.
