transmission grinding?

Alright so I love my new 2008 limited. But I have a problem. I've noticed that when I'm at about 40 and coasting on a main road, and step on the gas more than 25% so the tranny downshifts, (I believe its the 4-3 down) I hear a 1/4 second grind as the converter lips into gear.

This blows and I don't want a full tranny rebuild, but it still has 3 years and 15k miles left on the powertrain warranty. Anyone have any similar experiences? I'm hoping this tranny doesn't turn into a nightmare after other peoples accounts of their experiences. Someone make me feel a little better about this!

TSB 09-6-1

They'll have your truck for a couple of days as they'll need to pull the tranny and replace the overdrive friction plates. I just had it done to my '08.

TSB 09-6-1
04/06/09
6R75 TRANSMISSION - SQUAWK NOISE DURING
POWER/FORCED DOWNSHIFT

FORD:
2007-2008 Expedition

This article supersedes TSB 08-19-8 to update the vehicle model years and remove the production fix date.
ISSUE
Some 2007-2008 Expedition vehicles equipped with a 6R75 transmission may exhibit a squawk type noise during hard acceleration down shifts (4-3), (5-3) and (6-3) downshifts. The noise is produced during the release of the overdrive clutch.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Follow Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-01B to replace the overdrive friction plates.
WARRANTY STATUS: Eligible Under Provisions Of New Vehicle Limited Warranty Coverage
IMPORTANT : Warranty coverage limits/policies are not altered by a TSB. Warranty coverage limits are determined by the identified causal part.

What....that Ford takes ownership on their mistakes and offers a fix under warranty?

I just know the buddies who have chevys that i rag on for being crappy are gonna be like, "30 g's and its getting the tranny pulled after a week of having it huh?"

my other ford has 180k on the clock and pulls a trailer about 15k miles a year and plows is more bulletproof than any other truck i've ever known. So basically i talk **** about chevys and dodges all day....i might have to keep this tranny drop on the DL so as to not lose any ford credibility!

Good info. I have had mine in the dealership shop twice now. The tech and service manager have both heard the noise, but were clueless about what it might be.

Print out the TSB and make sure they complete the work as detailed in the instructions. It's a fairly simple procedure although labor intensive as they'll have to drop the tranny from the truck. Good news is, if properly done, the squawk will go away. The bad news is, they could really screw it up and you'll be worse off. That's if they don't know what they're doing.

Good luck.

It went in to the shop yesterday for another issue (leaking axle seal), so I told them about this. I really hope they dont screw it up.

I don't have the full one, but give them what was posted and they can look it up. It's common. I have had mine fixed TWICE for the same problem. Fix only lasts about 30K miles.

I have not hung out or read the F150 forums, but it might be worth checking. Another member here had it happen twice also.

Old thread I know... just wanted to let ya'll know that my downshift squawk is back. Fix only lasted about 40k miles. I'm now out of warranty and Ford doesn't want to perform a good will repair on the vehicle. Suffice it to say, I'm not thrilled. Has it been confirmed that the noise has no detrimental affect on the rest of the transmission components?
