"stainless" catback exhaust rusting???

About two months ago I had a local exhaust shop put a stainless steel cat back dual exhaust kit on my truck. I was told the whole thing is stainless including the tips. Well yesterday I noticed that I have rust spots all over the tips and there's rust on the actual exuast pipes, esp. at the seams where they welded it up. The rust has spread back from the seams a couple of inches though. Is this normal, because my Magnaflow I had on my old truck was on there for 4 years and there was barely any rust at all????

I don't know about exhaust pipes but with my handguns and rifles I can honestly say my stainless guns are the most prone to corosion/rust.

I have no personal experience here, but I found this by googling stainless steel rust

. Can stainless steel rust? Why? (I thought stainless did not rust!)

Answer: Stainless does not "rust" as you think of regular steel rusting with a red oxide on the surface that flakes off. If you see red rust it is probably due to some iron particles that have contaminated the surface of the stainless steel and it is these iron particles that are rusting. Look at the source of the rusting and see if you can remove it from the surface. If the iron is embedded in the surface, you can try a solution of 10% nitric and 2% hydrofluoric acid at room temperature or slightly heated. Wash area well with lots and lots of water after use. Commercially available "pickling paste" can also be used. See "The Care and Cleaning of Stainless Steel" for more information.

good luck,

sounds like they just did not use SS welding wire and the weld will rust and where the heat transferd will rust.

they didnt use ss wire.. so its rusting.. this will then spread to your pipes...

stainless can and wil rust... quicky too... if its nicked or chipped (rocks or other debris) that part will start to rot... just as quick as regular steel..
