Rusting Tips

I have bazooka style tips on my truck and they are rusting out and the stainless - chrome finish is gone. does anyone have a brand that held up best? I would prefer weld on tips so they are harder to tear off.

SS and mild steels don't weld together very nicely, so I'm told. One of the problems I've noticed with chromed steel tips is the exhaust heats and cools metal frequently so your going to get condensation on/in them, plus the fumes seem to be some what caustic. I've never come across a chrome plate that will last more than 5 years on an exhaust tip.

SS is the way to go, a 304 is pretty resistant and looks good. If you can find a welder who's willing to try, you can get a clamp on tip and have it tack welded to the pipe. However, I haven't seen many fall off, in fact I've never seen it. I did try to remove one that had been on for a few years, I had to cut the pipe off and put it in a vise. never discount the power of rust welding.

I use Gibson. The truck I tried to remove them on was also a gibson tip. You have to watch the style of clamp. The junk with the 3 or 4 screws that pinch the pipe (like the globe on a ceiling fan light) aren't worth the effort. Gibson uses a band style clamp, a single SS bolt constricts the diameter of the tip and hold quite well.

If your concerned about loosing one, I like to have the pipe half way through the tip. Basically I cut enough pipe off so you can't see it in the tip, but leave more than I need for the clamp. Then you can take a small diameter Aluminum cable and make a safety wire so it can't fall off. Maybe tie one end to gap in the clamp around the bolt and the other to the pipe hanger or frame.

You should have 9007 bulbs. I like PIAA's bulbs over the cheaper bulbs I've tried. Unless you mean housings, then I think it's almost a crap shoot with all of the imported models available.

I know they have a 2.75", and I was pretty sure they did 2, 2.25, 2.5 and 3.0" as well. Perhaps autoanything didn't carry them. They will not constrict down 1/4" and hold well. You might be able to expand the pipe out, but welding a new adapter on should give you alittle more room to work.
