Hey guys, I started it up today and its really nice Only thing is its really loud. I mean much louder than it was before. It sound close to normal at idle but when revved at like 2000rpm's, its really loud. No smoke at all maybe a puff of black but thats it. The engine seemed to shake a little more when I turned it off also. So what is it all you IP pros? Advanced too much or retarded too much( I lined up the timing marks on it).
that's with the marks lined up? from my understanding,thats kinda rare to be so close.
my idi timing ear leaves a lot to be desired lol.
but IF anything,your too far advanced as opposed to being retarded id guess.
your definitely in the ball park right there though snapon,surprising with lined up marks.
don't advance it any would be my suggestion,OR go ahead and retard it some for now,until you get a meter on it.
they do rattle quite a bit when properly timed.i know it shocked the heck out of me too.when it's too far advanced,you just know it,as it sounds like bad lifters in a gas job.its a very unhealthy sound that no one could assume is normal i wouldn't think.
and the shake when you kill the engine;
mine did this when i first got it.over time it stopped shaking so much and became pretty smooth at shut down.
when i got my timing meter on it; the "retarded gas engine shut down shake" (i like to call it lol) was back.
i think your close right there.
one thing i noticed if it helps any;
is that,too far advanced besides sounding bad,didn't yield any power beyond just right.
if you go for a test drive,retarded timing will feel like the truck is held back and unable to "free roll" as if you switched in a high gear set or something when its right on.
I also ground down a wrench, and it's a real life-saver!
As for being louder. That's how it was for me too with a fresh pump and Injectors. It was fairly quiet with the worn out pump and injectors, but the fresh ones....MAN it was way louder! Didn't run much better, but ran louder and just sounded better.
I just have my marks lined up, then a slight twist tot he passenger side...absolutely NO idea what it is, but hey...it starts every mornign and runs great for being N/A. Yeah, probably about the thickness of a dime past the lines. For me, I'm not going to worry about it anymore than that because it's working great.
Ok, now that i let it run a little longer, it seems to have quieted down a bit. I said I lined up the marks but honestly, the IP mark is about 1mm towards the passenger side so I think I'm just about correct on the timing. I want wreck to chime in here and see if his was loud at first too. but it really feels sooooo much better now, the pedal is softer and the turbo whistle is much more pronounced, I'm so happy right now. The pedal is so much more responsive too You really got to get a turbo XLT, its a different power level than n/a and I'm never going back.

Mine is also a little over to the passenger side, I guess the marks got slightly off when I tightened it but it runs good enough for me now. Maybe slightly less than a dimes width. I can already feel the difference on the pedal, though
Snapon did you do new injectors too? I couldnt remember but i thought you might have said that it was just the pump cause you had already done the injectors a while back... Just curious
I did the injectors in December and then just the pump now. Its running nice and strong, who woulda guessed the return line caps would start leaking again. I'll do that headache tomorrow, lol.

Awesome to hear! Turbo probably isn't making a difference in the pedal feel now is it? I am SO jealous and REALLY want a turbo!

yes it was a loud ******* at first but more so for me as i still had a small part where the DP was touching the firewall. When it was properly timed, it didnt even sound right, it was so loud. But thats what you get when the system was so worn out that it was barely limping along hahaha.
