After reading this thread I checked my truck out and it does the same thing as the OP, it drops back to idle when I let off the throttle. It has been this way a long time, maybe as long as I have had truck. Will this hurt anything? How big a job is this and is it expensive to fix?
thanks RB
As Mark mentioned earlier there could be other factors. So first try checking the external wiring harness for bad or loose connections before getting it to a shop, unless you know some one with a tester.
Thanks for all the pointers and links. checking out that e40d rebuild link makes me realize why there are people out there that do this for a living. a little more than i would like to take on at this point in time. going out tomorrow and seeing if someone can check my pcm for any codes and go from there.
Mine only does it if you tap the brake after letting off the gas. Been doing it for years (tapping the brake to let the engine go to idle) to save a drop of diesel fuel.

I haven't thought about it but if the TPS is at idle, is the motor using a drop more fuel? Like a boat, pull the throttle to idle and it stops. I don't know?
Yes the trans. temp was up to operating temp when i tested it. this is a rebuilt tranny that i got from ford and the problem started about 1year after i installed it. (been going on for a few years now) never seemed to bother me too much unless i was coming down the mountain passes and i had to ride the brakes a lot. Broke off the end of my shift lever and overdrive switch last year and replaced both, got me thinking that right after i installed this trans.that when i turned off the od switch that it would always seem to go into the next lowest gear 4th to 3rd,3rd to 2nd ,2nd to low depending on what gear i was in at the time. i sorta used it as a downshift button. Is this normal? because now it
only works from 4th to 3rd. Does this point towards a faulty solenoid?
Anyway i,m rambling on. Got an appointment to have it checked out on wednesday.
Any more input is always welcome

Turning off the OD switch will only keep the trans from shifting to 4th, or if it is in 4th it will downshift to 3rd. If you are in 3rd when you press it, the coast clutch will come on to provide engine braking, but it will not downshift to 2nd. If you are in 2nd it will not downshift to 1st.
Today i was looking at the harness connector at the pcm and i noticed the brown/orange wire at the top was broken off. not a clean cut, more like someone had messed it up trying to get a tester on it. Got a schematic
and verified it went to my clutch solenoid. Jumpered wires back together
test drove and solenoid was working again after a 3 year siesta.wow
compression braking once again.Life is good!!
Sure glad i did not have to tear into the tranny yet, that day will come soon enough i'm sure.
Thanks to mark, tim, glenn, and all you guys here for your help.
