I have a 97 7.3 ps with e40d automatic. when i am driving down the road and let off the gas the truck seems to freewheel (when going downhill it speeds up)almost like i put it in neutral. could this be a torque converter problem? electrical issue? mechanical? Anyone else ever experienced this problem? tranny shifts ok, a little soft but i guess that is normal.no upgrades or chips installed at this point
Seems to me that mine does this but it had descent compression braking going down the mountain passes out west this summer by taking it out of OD. Try taking it out of OD and see if it behaves the same.
it will drop down a gear at highway speeds when i turn the od off but still have the same problem especially around town at lower than highway speeds. does not appear to have any compression braking
I bet you checked it but I gotta say check the fluid level and If you have not been in there lately I suggest changing the filter and fluid and dropping some Lubgard in there. May not be anything more than what Glenn said. LUBEGARD Automatic Transmission Fluid Protectant
fluid level is fine, changed out filter a fluid last year.this problem was happening before that though. when i let off accelerator in 2nd 3rd or od
it goes to idle with or without od switch on or off. Any ideas out there?
could this be my torque converter not locking up??
This may be a dumb idea but if you install a TC lock switch and lock it when it goes to idle maybe that will tell you something. I can't remember the color of wire I tapped into on the harness by the trans to install a toggle switch but I bet Rocky could tell you! If it went to idle and you threw the switch and it locked then maybe the wiring is screwed up.
if im reading this correctly, your tranny is fine. stock pcm will not lock the tc and keep it locked while decel. its also been while since ive had an e4od.. with a chip the tc will stay locked untill 25mph like glen said then it will unlock and free wheel. i remember when i sent my chip out to be reburned it was the longest week of my life! stock pcm calibrations blow for around town driving. having it tuned IMO is much better
This has nothing to do with the torque converter. It doesn't matter if the converter is locked or not, there should be engine braking.
Since it does have engine braking in second gear the coast clutch is working. When the shifter is in 1 or 2 the coast clutch is engaged by a hydraulic circuit, there are no electronics involved. With the shifter in OD and OD off by the switch on the end of the shifter the coast clutch is engaged by a solenoid. That solenoid is not working.
It could be the solenoid, the wiring to the solenoid, or even the PCM.
i would assume the solenoid is mounted on the transmission? is there a way of testing it to see if it is the solenoid or the wiring to it?
If both are fine , who would i see about getting the pcm checked out? I'm not to fond of our local dealership.
I believe the solenoid is mounted inside the tranny along with several others. I am not sure exactly how to test them without actually pulling the pan.
