Drive shaft brake

Anyone have one they took off?

Thoughts?

If it works fine for a parking brake, that makes for easy rear disk upgrade.

Huh?
What does parking brake and rear disc have to do with you breaking a driveshaft.

I have one that came off of a 460 F-350.

Getting sick of the crappy drums in the back. Its bad in the winter here with the water and salt.

With the Drive shaft Brake I can use it as a P-brake, and not have to worry about what calipers I put on the rear.

I wont even touch the parking brake in the winter.
To afriad of it freezing up.

My 50 Plymouth has one on the driveshaft! My disk brake conversion has emergency brake cables that work good.

Those shaft brakes are crappy at best, and stupid expensive IF you can find one. Like $1000 - $1500.
Not worth it.
There's a kit out now for the OBS to use SD rear hubs, rotors and calipers to get the job done right.
It's $$$ but it's the best way to go.

X2 on that! I was gonna say the same thing about drive shaft parking brakes.

We have a W5500 at work that has one and it SUCKS. It can't even hold the truck empty on a slight hill (and yes, the mechanic was there last week, it's still well adjusted). The extra gear reduction in the diff is what makes the p-brake effective at the wheel.

The second problem is that you CANNOT use the drive-shaft brake as a secondary emergency braking system. I'm not sure why, but every truck I've seen with one, had a big yellow sticker indicating that in the cab.

Now, to look up this magical kit that uses SD rear hubs on my OBS

If i'm going to dink around and change lug patterns, i'm just going to swap new axles.

Was a thought, thats all. =)

But now that you mention the gear ratio's and such, that makes sense.

.

Hey now Jim! Your talking 'bout my baby.

I love my driveshaft parking brake,, and my once piece I-beam front axle, and my ultra cool 10 lug wheels.

You cant just bolt it to your truck. The brake uses a special output housing that requires the same tranny case used in 4WD applications. A person with a 2WD could switch trans case to a 4WD unit and remove the transfer case and attach the brake. If your truck is 4WD then I dont know as I am not familiar enough with that set up to say.
