Post Parking Brake Expert needed

I replaced my rear axle and parking brake pedal assembly on my 1994 Bronco and now the parking brake never tightens, it just goes to the floor with little resistance. I checked the manuals and they claim the parking brake is self adjusting. I have set and released (lifted the pedal manually) over 40 times now and it is still loose.

How does this "self-adjusting" business work? What do I need to do to get tension on the parking brake cables?

Regards,
John

John,
Your REAR brakes are self adjusting, but the parking brake has a manual adjustment. Follow the parking brake cables from the rear wheels forward and you'll see the tension equalizer. You need to make your initial adjustment (and final adjustments) with the threaded rod and nut.

Hope this helps..

Sometime around 1992 Ford switched from the threaded rod adjuster to an 'self adjusting' parking brake assembly. This is in addition to the self adjusters in the rear brakes. The pedal assembly has a rachet in it that is supposed to maintain tension somehow. But I haven't found how to set it up. I'm suspecting the rachet spring needs to be installed fully wound and as adjustments are needed the spring rachets out some. But this is all guessing...

My apologies.... according to my manuals, they were still the "old" style.
