repairing volare hack install!

so, finally I am getting to the red 56 I picked up last may.
really crazy uncomfortable on the road.

well, YEH.. they installed the volare clip UNDER the frame,
so the front is almost 4 inches lower than it should be,
making the caster nutty..

some (cellphone) pics..

as I got to cut it out, going to put a mustang II here instead.

Sam

front clip off

weird cut

some spacers UNDER the chassis to fill

then hack up the adjuster clearance!

the upper arm adjustment to try to compensate

It's a good morning to be inside today Sam - Don't blow away.
That's not a bad looking engine in there - What did it come with?

At this time I haven't gotten to battery location on my 56. I notice yours is mounted on the left firewall. With it being there how much room is there for the heater blower ?

Thats where the PO put it.. Its up really hi, so the standard heater blower should fit like normal.
I haven't measured for that.. but I can later today when I go back to work on it.

Just starting to work on the truck.
(never done stock heat fan)

| looking at this more, the battery is right in the way of the stock fan.

At least your's was welded in, when I got my 53, the PO had cut 4 holes in the bottom frame rail and bolted one in. They had hacked the frame so bad I had no choice but to go with a clip.

Congratulations, and thanks, Sam, for saving another truck from the depths of PO despair.

It's probably what is sold as "power steering fluid" nowadays, it isn't ATF.

I don't know much about the clips, but why would mounting the Volare under the frame "lower" it? It seems like it would be raising it.

Sure is a lot of ugly metal there, I don't blame you for hacking it off.

I have power steering fluid in my volare.. its clear. and much more runny than this stuff.

here is the template on my chassis. you cut out the material not covered by the template. this positions the clip into the chassis in the correct position for anti-dive and having the lower control arms parallel to the road surface.

now if you install the thing UNDER the chassis, then the front will be 3 inches lower, and the back inchish lower. (chassis at same position relative to the ground.

this causes it to lower the front edge of the lower control arm, this causing negative caster (tilt to the front)
causing very jittery steering.

to attempt to fix this on this truck, they forced the arms back at the upper ball joint as far as they could, this also affected camber (lean in/out) and made the outside of the tires wear significantly (almost to the tread wear marks)..
