Hi! My 88 Bronco II shifts gears well my problem is that after shifting into final drive the torque converter is not locking up always or goes in and out of lock up.does anyone have any input as to the cause of this or a cure Help
Because the torque converter lockup clutch (TCC) is electronically controlled, I usually start by looking at the engine management system. First step is usually to pull codes from the computer to see if there are any faults in the engine managements system that might cause the computer to erratically control the TCC. Then you can monitor the electronic signal to the TCC solenoid to see if the PCM is choosing/not choosing to lockup the TCC. The solenoid circuit is a pretty basic DC circuit (ground side switched), so it is pretty easy to monitor with a voltmeter.
If the TCC is merely responding to the PCM's commands, then you can look futher into the engine management system to see why the PCM is erratic in controlling the TCC. If the TCC is doing something different from what the PCM is telling it to do, then the fault is a mechanical/hydraulic fault inside the transmission.
many years ago my 87 would shift in and out of final gear sometimes then became more and more often. i found out that it was a bad OD drum, piston, and clutch pack. the springs inside looked like they had been in a blender. hope this isnt your problem.
when u say final drive, and torque conv lockup, u meaning overdrive, and shifting back and forth between overdrive and 4th? mine does it bad, havent really looked into it much yet, kindof afraid to. trying to hold speeds 35 and up it'll constantly shift back and forth.
