4.2 engine exchange

I have a 1997 f150 4.2 the engine has a bad knock and I have decided to replace the engine with a rebuilt 4.2 longblock. I have the info to replace the engine and have done this on several previous trucks, but not on this new of one. Could anyone give a few tips about pulling out the 4.2 and can the trans be left in the truck or if not can it be left on the engine and come out together. Any help would make this an easier task. Thaks.

I think it would be easier to leave the tranny in the truck and just pull the engine

I have a 97 4.2 83,000 miles that locked p. Im replaceing the engine with a new rebuilt one. I haven't done this in a long long time and my best feind and mechanic has passed way. Does anyone know where I can download instructions so I do it right. Drained all the fluids tonight, it was a start.
Any help is welcome. Thanks

Well the first thing you need to do is to get your self a manual. Clymers Chilton or Haynes. You can get one from most chain autoparts store

Pull the inner fenderwells for convenience, lots of penetrant on the exhaust manifold hardware, strip all the external stuff you can before pulling, take LOTS of digital pics, get NEW O-rings for the injectors, and pull them out CAREFULLY or you can damage the tips.

We've ordered the chilton book from auto zone, it will be here by Wenesday. I haven't pulled the finderwells but thought about it, so now I will. All bolts are in zip bags and with the parts that where taken off. I need the book so I know where all goes back too. Like I said, it has been a long long time sense I pulled a motor and it was VW Beedle. 4 bolts and out it comes. I thank you for any helpful posts, shortcuts are good. While it is out we are going to rebuild the clutch too. We are just in for a lot of fun.
