Hi,
Just had my 2000 ex in for new brakes. I brought it to a Ford dealer and just now was going over the paper work. It states that the clunking I hear is due to a stablizer link and that my shocks/struts need attention (they did not review this with me). What is the Stablizer link and would that be an immediate repair?
Thanks. Rich
The front stabilizer bar is mounted just behind the front axle. Two attatchment points on axle and one on each end onto frome just behind where front tire ends. Very easy to replace on your own right in your driveway.
I used the greasable ones moog makes ordered from rockauto dot com. They also have a discount code for fte as they are a sponsor.
One word of advice on end links. Sometimes, it is not just the endlink bushings that are loose. Be sure to torque the bolts that pass through the frame to the required 80 ft-lb. Otherwise, the bolts actually "slip" about 1 mm in the frame and make a loud POP when the front axle twists in a turn.
Some posters have actually drilled out the bush/mount bracket to 1/2" (instead of 12 mm clearance hole) in order to get a higher torque setting on the bolt. To get my end link to quit "popping", I actually had to exceed the specified torque (100 ft lb). I did not break the bolts and the popping stopped.
