gas mileage

i am "restoring" a 78 bronco and my wife tells me that i have to do something about the mileage before i can do anything "fun" with it i e 33" tires. i understand that it will never be a civic (thank god) but right now it goes through $30 every week and it only goes to work and back. (12 miles maybe round trip)

what will give me the most bang for the buck mileage wise?

Well the bottom line is you're driving a 4WD with a large displacement V8 and the aerodynamics of a brick. You might want to try convincing your wife that taller tires will actually help gas mileage. I detailed out some other options in a previous post:

As far as the most bang for your buck...go out and buy a dozen eggs and put 1 under the accelerator pedal, then try not to break it!

Well then she should know that increasing the diameter of the rear tires effectively raises (numerically lowers) the rear end ratio and allows the vehicle to travel further per revolution of the engine.

Example:

In a vehicle with 3.50:1 rear end ratio the engine will turn at 2744 RPM with 30 inch tires at 70 MPH. If you put 33 inch tires on the same vehicle the engine will turn 2495 RPM at 70 MPH. Lower RPMs...less fuel consumption.

Egg gets on the floor boards, then your shoe, the wife's new carpet, "what happen to the eggs I just bought".
Get yourself a Heavy throttle return spring, a job closer to home, a home closer to the job, a quiet friend to carpool with, helium in the new tires, raise the back up so it's going down hill all the time, make stop signs optional, do extra chores to earn gas money. What did I miss....the point?
