I bought a 79 dent and I cant get the tailgate open. The latch isn't hooked to any linkage inside, and I don't wanna ruin it. Is there any way to get it open?
^ What he said. You have to squeeze both rods towards the center at the same time. It's not easy, but it can be done. You may need an extra set of hands. Good luck.
One for them may have dropped down out of site. You might need to get a small inspection mirror and a flash light to find it. Thin mechanical fingers are a useful tool in this situation. Good Luck. Be prepared to cuss a little (or a lot) depending on you.
You can also open the tailgate by inserting a screwdriver into the latches from the sides from inside the box. If you notice there is a small slot to insert the screwdriver for emergency openings like this when one rod is missing when looking at the back of the tailgate at the side latches. Pry one side open then the other etc...
Oye! I had this problem when First purchased Burt. The answers you are getting here a good. Also remember that once you DO get it opened that in order to avoid the same thing happening again (providing that both rods are in fact there ) is to make sure to put the obviously missing nut back on where the rod comes through the latch. It's one of those push on "one way" metal nuts. Sorry I can't remember the technical term for it.. but it stops the rod from falling out of the mechanism again later.
Good luck!

You can get the metal aftermarket ones in the help section of most autopart stores, that seem to last a lot longer, as the plastic ones tend to break all the time.

That's it! Thanks for the actual name! Geesh... this getting older is not for the faint of heart or the memory! :-)
