Is the glass all the way down for the latch to open?

yes i can open and close the tailgate just fine, i removed the striker on the driver side so i didn't have to deal with that bull****.

the passenger side striker is starting to get chewed up now so i need some new ones fast, and a way to open the latch on the driver side

The strikers should be available through the Graveyard. I have never verified this but I think they are the same as the door strikers. Both latches should open when you pull the release handle even if you closed the latches manually. If they/it doesn't open when the handle is pulled, the suggestion that the window is not all the way down is a viable option. The linkage interlock requires the gate glass be all the way down before the latches will release. The linkage assembly is in the gate just below the handle.

It is highly possible. The clips that "lock" the linkage arms in place were nylon and when they get old and brittle they tned to shatter leaving the linkage to flop around and potentially fail.

The door striker bushings and tailgate bushings are different. All four come in the kit previously mentioned.
