It's true that there is a lot of similarity among mechanical fuel pumps. A large number use the same basic body. With the rebuildable type pump, the two halves of the pump can be reassembled to orient the fuel fittings in whatever position desired, and fittings changed as needed.
Then if the correct small block actuating arm is installed, it should work. Some other Ford engine families may even have the right arm (but not Cleveland family), but you or your friend will have to do that research.
Swap meet vendors will often have a big ol' pile of grubby old fuel pumps, and if you are resourceful you hopefully can find a good core that can be turned into a small block Ford type.
