Mech Fuel Pump

I'm helping a friend of mine build a 351w for his mustang and were using a roller motor out of a wrecked f150 and he's ditching the efi for a carb set up we have the timing cover off of an 80's truck and he wants an old school mech pump that has the screw on filter but our search of the surrounding yards came up empty and i cant find anything on the internet can some one help me out here with a part number or a site to look at? Thanks Chuck

Those were used on the very early V8s. Try looking for a pump for a 1962 Fairlane with a 221. I used one of these pumps on my Fairlane, but I picked it up at a swap meet. I think it was not quite the right one so I had to swap the arm.

They are great if you have a rusty tank, as they'll hold a huge amount of dirt before clogging. The design allows the dirt to sit at the bottom, where it doesn't interfere with fuel flow.

The nice thing about these pumps is that they are screwed together, so you can rebuild them.

If you can't find a new one, check out the swap meets. Bring a modern sample if you can, to compare the arm.

Y would i look at a mustang site this isnt about the car its about the motor? Its a 351W related question and its out of a truck. Thanks ill have to keep my eyes out for one next time. he wants one because of how rebuildable they are. Is there any companys that make these still? Or is it a long discontinued part?

Stock mechanical pumps are cheap enough that I wouldnt want to bother with a rebuildable one. $35 at autozone, readily available, 1 year warranty

The biggest advantage of the old ones is the large filter that resists clogging. I had repeated clogging of the small inline filter in my old Fairlane so deleted it in favour of the old style rebuildable with integral filter.

If it were available, a non-rebuildable integral filter type should be okay as well.

It's difficult to get rebuild kits nowadays, but if you get some suitable material, you can make a new diaphragm which is usually the part that fails. It used to be tough to get material that holds up to gasoline, but not so nowadays. I got a piece of "hypalon" material from a place that repairs boats (they use it to patch Zodiac inflatable boats) to cut into replacement diaphragms and it works well.

So if one wants to save money, then he can buy a swap meet pump for $5 or $10, and replace the diaphragm as needed. Just make sure the material has cloth reinforcement, is about the same thickness as original and holds up to gasoline. I put a small piece of the hypalon in a jar of gasoline for a couple weeks to see if it would break down or soften up. It showed no change, so I used it.

What did the gas look like after the two weeks...

The gasoline looked fine.

351W and all other small blocks use the same mechanical fuel pumps.
