My engine temp guage went on the fritz today, I thought it was no big deal. May the needle was sticking or i need a new thermostat. I call the dealer and they told me without even looking at it that usually when that happens its the headstuds, gaskets. Can someone help guide me in the right direction. I havnt lost any coolant. No white smoke. A month ago my radiator puked a little and it never happend again. It was after a snow plow session. Any help advice would be appreciated.
Typically you won't see white smoke w/ a headgasket leak. You will eventually get puking and your dealership is correct that some signs include elevated coolant temps, etc.
However, these things can be caused by a number of things, so no need to worry prematurely.
Lets start w/:
Truck year model?
Any codes?
How many miles do you have on the truck?
Any mods (other than the snow plow option)?
Do you have aftermarket gauges?
Any recent repair work?
Have you ever flushed the coolant?
right now the needle is all the way at the bottom and will only come up a hair. Should I take it to the dealer? is there something i can do to test it. Can I make my oun degas bottle pressure tester or do they sell them cheap somewhere??? Thanks for any help bismic
You can easily make your own degas bottle pressure gauge. You can install a tee in the vent line that goes into the degas bottle. Actually, I would not cut the line - just remove it from the degas bottle, install the tee in the hose, then install a new short piece of hose to connect it back to the degas bottle. Then you can run a long section of new hose into the cab from the "tee". On this hose, you can install a vacuum/pressure gauge. You can read it while driving.
Your issues could easly just be a bad temperature sensor. First, make sure the connector is well-seated on the sensor and that the wires look OK. Push-comes-to-shove, you can just order a new one and see what happens.
That little gauge will give you some very useful information ,did for me.
Has anyone posted pictures of everything needed to make one up?
I'm sure there are plenty of 6.0L owners who should have a gauge on their truck.
I can list what I purchased and how I set mine up when I see my truck again.... . . .
