I have wires under the hood that are cut and go no where. I need to just start all over. Its really rigged from previous owner. They also have vacum advance to full manifold vacum and is staying advanced. I moved to correct port on carb and it wont run. Have to pull distributer and move a tooth over. I dont know, I hear having total timing set and locked is good for high stahl converters

Even Better Reason Yank all the stuff out except to your lights and so on and Rewire it, its rather easy and will be done in a hour or less, and if your not gonna be hard on it you really wouldn't need the MSD6al just the MSD6 box No limiter save a little change anyways... just a idea though I ran my stock Dizzy in my last stock displacemnt 460 but it had a Cam Dove heads with a little loving a alum intake and 850 DP Demon carb and that Dizzy worked fine just had a Crane fireball Box with Limter and a Fresh stock coil worked great and i turned it to 6200
Thats the one I am waiting to put in my wheeler... Should have it done this weekend... simple old school tech..... I got all pissed off at my Dura spark.
Keep your duraspark distributor and spend that $200 on a MSD6AL
I'm with you on this one. Keep the Duraspark they work great. Be a lot cheaper than buying a new distributor.
But as far as hei goes I've seen good ones and bad ones. The one that Summit sells under there own name actually seems to work very well. The pro comp(or whatever there called) seem to be junk. My brother went through 2 of them, one was actually bent and wobbled when the engine was running. Also keep in mind because of there size there is some fitment issues, usually with the water neck.
what kind of "high stall converter" do you have with a "stockish 429 that wont see above 5000 rpms?"
I suggested to buy a MSD 6AL is for three reasons
A- I hate it when the duraspark boxes leak that goop all over your inner fender and soon crap out.
B- the rev limiter is a nice feature to have and its not much more expensive than the regular 6a
C- the 6al (and the 6a also) will clear up a good many wires under the hood. A hot, a ground and 2 coil wires and youre in business. Add a tach wire if you have one.
I would be against buying an aftermarket distributor (MSD would be my preference over a Mallory but thats not the point) for three reasons.
A- a MSD distributor (either the vacuum secondary or the mechanical) uses Duraspark guts in a fancy case.
B- there would be absolutely no performance gain by using an MSD distributor over a Duraspark distributor in an engine that "wont see above 5000 rpms."
C- if you have a timing issue with your Duraspark you will more than likely have the exact same timing issue with an aftermarket distributor all things being equal and in good working order.
Are you sure your engine is in time? Are you sure you are getting a good vacuum signal to the advance? Is it possible your timing chain has jumped a tooth?
I will say a vacuum advance works well with a 3500 stall provided its been recurved to match.
I gotta agree with Kris. Keep your duraspark dizzy, or if it is in bad shape get another and re-curve it then hook it to the 6al box (mounted inside the cab!) and you'll be very happy for a long time. You can spend a few $$ more for the offroad box if you want to mount it under the hood, but putting it in the cab makse sure you keep it dry.
hey alpha, wasnt talking about mine being a high stall converter. My friends drag car is and his timing is locked. Thanks for the pointers on distributors. Going to hold up on buying anything till I figure this timing out on what I got then. Truck is still 60 miles away in Carolina and mess with it on Saturdays.
