i have a 51 f1 truck flat head engine i cant get running i have changed to 12volt neg ground with alt. i have the starter hooked to the relay and bat. now i need to hook the coil in there is a i and s on the relay the s I had hooked to the key switch to engage the starter. were do i hook the + and - sides of the coil to this so it will fire previous owner had cut out the wiring harness disassembled the carb the desided that it wasnt what he wanted and sold the truck to me. I cant tell whats missing just trying to start the engine help
As you have done, the S terminal on the solenoid is to send battery power via the big cable to the starter and is activated by the start position on the ignition switch.
Power (12 volts) goes to the + terminal of the coil from the ignition side of the ignition switch. (Different from the accessory terminal so that the points are only energized when running) Because 12 volts will burn the points you will have to install a ballast resistor (cuts the points back to around 6-8 volts) in the wire from the ignition switch to the + terminal on the coil.
The I terminal on the solenoid is a 12 volt by-pass that sends 12 volts to the coil when starting / cranking so that starting is better and is also attached to the + terminal on the coil.
The – terminal on the coil goes to the distributor (points).
