Ok guys and gals. I have been told several different ways to time an engine. For instance, if my engine is calling for 10 degrees BTDC do I set my balancer on 10 BTDC on the compression stroke and drop the distributor in over the number 1 or do I set the motor at TDC and move the distributor to advance the timing to 10 degrees BTDC? This is in regards to an 86 302 that has been installed in my truck. Thanks in advance for the input.
Set to TDC and drop in the distributor rotor to #1 plug wire then adjust with light. There are no stupid questions, although some of the answers are at times.
Sometimes I insert the distributor with a tooth offset in one or the other direction so I can position the vacuum advance can in a more optimal place. For example, it usually points straight forward, but I move it if it hits something, like a radiator hose or an AC compressor, when I'm trying to adjust timing.
Ok let me make sure I have this right. I set TDC on the compression stroke, which theoretically should be 0 on the balancer. I drop the distributor in pointing directly over #1. I then snug the bolt hold the distributor down enough to allow movement to advance or retard. I hook up my timing light and start the vehicle and advance or retard via the distributor. I should be reading 10BTDC when the light flashes when I point it at the balancer. Sorry if I seem really stupid but I just want to make sure I am doing it 100% right before I screw something up. Thanks again everyone.
You should be good to go. Just make sure you have the vacuum advance can pointed where you want it to allow range of movement. The rotor and shaft will turn slightly as it seats into the timing gear. Sometimes it takes a bit to get it seated right with oil pump shaft. Don't force it, or you will cause yourself some grief. If you have trouble seating to oil pump, turn engine by hand using a wrench on the crank bolt and it should drop right in.
Thanks everyone. I just wanted to hear input from people who know what they are doing before I follow someone else's bad advice. I really do appreciate the info. This is a great community and I am glad to be part of it. I hope one day I can repay the favor
