This is located to the LEFT of TDC for an 89 5.0 EFI, correct? Also, the VECI sticker has been painted over so I'd like to make sure that 10 degrees BTDC is the correct setting for my engine.
The engine rotates counterclockwise when looking at the front of the truck, so 10° btdc is actually to the right of tdc mark if you are looking down on the damper with the marks facing up. 10 degrees is the correct setting for the 5.0, you are correct.
Just a tip...
Make sure your SPOUT is disconnected... I had one HELL of a time timing my truck due to me being stubborn, and not looking at the book! I figured once a 302, always a 302... i was wrong to say the least
Yeah, I timed the truck yesterday without disconnecting the SPOUT. Took it for a test drive and I was blowing white smoke several times. It isn't the exhaust system since I had all of that replaced when I first got the truck back in April. I'll time it again today, but this time disconnect the SPOUT, and see what happens. Thanks.
Timed the truck with the SPOUT wires disconnected. Runs a lot better now. There still seems to be quite a bit of white exhaust, though. Doesn't seem to be too much of a problem if I put the truck in overdrive. Could be the oxygen sensor but that's just a shot in the dark.
Are you sure that white smoke isnt steam caused by a coolant leak into the combustion chamber. Are you having to top off your coolant level more then usual?
It could be steam. I've only had the truck running for two days now, haven't been able to check the coolant level reliably yet. It started doing this after I hauled a 5x8 trailer 6 to 8 hours from Atlanta to Pensacola a few weeks ago, but that was with a load. I'll keep an eye on the coolant level to be sure.
