84 300 timing

couple questions on timing my engine...

i read in a shop manual for my truck that the timing needs set at 12 degrees BTDC....what's the BTDC stand for? also...where is 12 deg. BTDC? the distributor i have has the ignition module on the distributor...

how do i do a rough-set on my timing?

Before Top Dead Center.

I always timed mine at 10 deg. Climb under the truck or in the engine bay and use a wire brush on the vibration dampner to find the timing marks. Use something like "white-out" or something similar that you can view the marks with. Put a timing light on it, pull and plug the vacuum hose from the distributor to the carb and check your timing. Should be between 10-12 BTDC.

I set min to 14 btdc and I find it offers better power with a steadt idle. Sometimes the vibration damper can slip on the crank so it is worth your while to spend 5 mins to make sure that TDC is really TDC. You do this by removing spark plug #1 ( nearest to the front) and use something soft like a used spark plug lead andpoke it down the plug hole ( dont drop it in and lose it) and turn the engine over by hand using a wrench on the crank pulley bolt and feel the piston coming up the cylinder and as it reaches the top ( TDC) compare the marks on the damper . If the are aligned continue to check your timing with a timing light following the procedure in the manual

wait! The module is tfi and it doesn't matter. But there is a spout connecter that needs to be unplugged before you time the engine.

what's the spout connector? is it the plug that goes into the module?

the spout connector is a plug that is attached to a wire or something. it should be located near the distributor and it unplugs. it is black and very small.

The spout connector is a yelow wire the connects to the TFI module on the side of the distributer. Don't pull on it too hard or you could strip the insullation off the wire. The wire goes into a shielded cable with 2 other wires and you can very easily strip the wire insulation and not be able to see it because it will be under some tape. This can cause the spout to short to shield which causes the engine to cut off.
Disconnect theis connector to set initial timing.
