Piston Differences

I was looking up different pistons available for the 300 and noticed quite a few sets with flattop pistons, but they usually say they fit from 65 - 76.

Such as:

FORD FALCON F150 E100 300 4.9 240 PISTONS TC1795 .040 - eBay (item 370307730150 end time Mar-11-11 10:32:47 PST)

What changed that would make these not work in a newer engine?

IIRC it was the pin size.

My guess would be the compression height. If they'll work in a 240 they'd be down pretty far in the bore of a 300 @TDC. Like 0.2" below deck.

It said it was for the 240 and the 300.
So is there different things you can do? Get 70s era rods so the pins match? Dunno. Just think it'd be an easy way to score flat top pistons and get some compression. Who knows, maybe I'm way off base.

The pin size on those is correct, but if they'll work in a 240 the compression height has to be ~1.5" vs. ~1.75" on the stock 300 piston.

There are plenty of 351w flat tops with the right compression height, no worries, just have the rods bushed.

What is having the rods bushed? This is going to be my first venture into internal engine repair so I don't know a lot of the terminology...yet.

I'm curious. I checked on Summit, and it shows the same pin diameter on all years. But that doesn't mean I'm wrong.

I just remember reading on fordsix someone asking about old style rods.

Basically a sleeve inside the rod that reduces the i.d. from .975" to .912", any decent machine shop should be able to do it.

I'm curious too, because those say the pin size is 0.975, just like the flat top ones in the listing above.

Basically a sleeve inside the rod that reduces the i.d. from .975" to .912", any decent machine shop should be able to do it.
That makes sense, and sounds easy enough.

I've heard the early 300s had .912" rod ends but I've never actually seen one. Not that I've been looking, though...

Beware of the specifications listed by Summit...or any of the big parts houses. Check directly with the manufacturer about the specifications.

I have heard oversize 390 pistons are the way to go - but require re-ballancing - which would be a requirement anyway IMO. - I was just researching now - I'll check back.....

I have a 94 FI 4.9 that I'd like to raise compression and a mild RV cam. And change over to the ZF 5-spd tranny.

and a tweek to the ECM

I have 360 pistons in mine, no rebalancing required, no pin bushing required. It really runs quite well. Just need to bore to a minimum of .050 over, I have mine at .080 with no issues, even in 98degree weather last summer.
