Does your speedo act up at the same time..? If so, if might be your VSS sensor on top of your rearend.. Mine went bad and caused the flashing OD light.. REplace it with Napa P/N 53080.. around $11.. easy to replace..
Also, do you have a temp gauge for your trans? Maybe getting hot.. for some reason..
And yes, it could have thrown a fault code..
The flashing OD light means the computer has stored a fault code for the transmission. Get it read by someone that can read Ford trans codes. Auto parts stores can't do it. Without the code you'll probably waste a lot of money changing the wrong parts, or kill your transmission.
No on the speedo acting up.I am running a superlift speedo healer if that makes it throw a random code.od light flashed again today and my trans temp went to 220 probly cause I drove a few miles with it on.stooped and restarted and it was fine and temp went down to 170's 180 where it usually is.dealer said the light has to be flashing when I bring it in but due the randomness and or being far from a dealer or working that will be hard.the only noted thing at my last dealer oil change was they said I'm due/ could use a flush

Were you towing at the time you got 220* ? Do you extra cooling on the trans ?

The dealer doesn't know what he's talking about. When the light flashes a code is stored. It will remain in the computer's memory for about a month after the last time the light flashed. Any tech with the right tool and even a small amount of knowledge will be able to read the codes.
Have not seen it covered yet, so how about the obvious: is the trans fluid level correct, and how does it look and smell? Also, are you reading the trans temps from the dash gauge or an aftermarket gauge?

They told me just the check engine light stores a code.two different dealers told me that cause I laughed at the first one that wanted 150 to "diagnos" my problem witch there's not much to check besides fluid and plug in without droping the trans.
When I just got my oil changed at a good dealer they said the level was good witch I knew that, but they recommended a flush because it was on the darkside and my rear different was dirty looking also. I'm assuming the last owner didn't change stuff at recommended intervals. So I guess ill start there since it doesn't act up or anything.
And my temp reading came from my x-monitor. It always runs a 140 to 180 temp besides when the light flashed causing my od to turn off witch in turn made the temp go up to 200-220 as I kept driving at 50-55 until I pulled over and stoped and restarted my truck.then got back on the hiway and the temp went back down.it does have a cooler, not sure what kind its mounted under my truck.
I agree with Mark...Don't go back to those dealers.. they are telling you false information about fault codes.. You do not need a CEL to store a fault code..

Not sure if i'm reading this right but did you mean it kicks out of OD and the temp goes up. If so do you feel the covertor un locking. I know at slow speeds in the mountain switch backs at 20f outside my trans use to raise to 215 degrees. Cause was an unlocked convertor. My 2cents.
Yes the od turns itself off when the light flashes keeping it in the lower gears.I don't know what it feels like when the torque converter locks or unlocks.this is only my second automatic ever.always been a manual fan over the 12 years since I've been driving.
