Makes me wish my truck had a grille lol, but at $80 each there's way to much to fix on my truck to bother with the grill... Plus my new radiator looks sexy from the front.

ha ha - if you ain't got a radiator - you don't need a grill!!
Those inserts arent the toughest things ever I was wheelin in my 2wd and the that was proven when I wound up putting a large limb threw the left one... My grandfather had broken the right one along time ago, so atleast now they're both busted up in a similar manner and resemble one another. None of my local yards carry these old trucks so unless I find one parting out on CL and get the inserts for cheap I may have to try and make something in order to protect the radiator.

You are right - they are cheap plastic. I do have a set of inserts with the stainless crossbar - for a 71. Will sell the pair for $125 if you're interested. They aren't perfect, but they are nice. Only difference between them and 72's is the stainless crossbar.

Reason: add photo
I need to get a new intake and carb otherwise i'll have to sease job hunting so I am probably better off trying to make something.
Understand. One easy thing to do (and it looked pretty good to me) is to get two pieces of expanded metal - cut them to fit the opening - paint them and screw them in. Same as I did behind the inserts on my truck.
Tree limbs won't break them either!! Just a thought.
Good luck in your job hunting. Times are tough - I feel for ya.
How exactly did you mount that grill mod? I have a 71 and I am having trouble getting the grill off. I take off the top two screws and the bottom 2 but it's still on there. Did you mount it to the insert itself?

There are six (6) screws holding the grill insert on my 72 - there may be seven on your 71. Two/three are behind the crossbar. I removed the insert, cut the expanded metal to fit, resting on the screw tabs and re-installed the inserts. You may need to knotch the expanded metal if it blocks the screw tabs for the inserts.
There is a photo I posted above of a 71 grill insert - look at the one on the right and you'll see the screw tabs - I think there are seven on it. Three on each side and, on yours, one in the middle - you need to remove the stainless crossbar to see the middle ones.

Okay that makes sense now. Does the stainless steel bar just slide out or what?
