72 GRILL MODIFICATION

Never have liked the grill on the 72's because they are too open/blank and you see all the radiator/front end so today I tried something - see what you think - even you Artic!! Cut some expanded metal to size, painted it and put it in behind the grill inserts. I happen to really like it.

I like it. It is a subtle customization that you just don't notice unless you really know what to look for. I like how it hides the radiator but still looks like it allows in enough air.

Thanks Bill. I like it for exactly those reasons - hides radiator and doesn't hinder airflow. May try painting it black though and see how that looks - main idea for me was to block some of the crap behind the grill. To me the 68-70 grills look much better than the 72's.

I like it I was going to do the same with my 71 this summer when I get it back together I had a piece and placed it there last summer just out of curiosity and it looked good so I picked up enough to do both sides

Glad ya'll like it - going to try painting it black and also thinking of cutting a piece of metal, painting it red and screwing in at the "crossbar" - like is on one or two of the earlier grills - not sure of the year. Just want to jazz up the front end some. Easy to remove if it looks stupid.

not sure of the year - just know there is one or two that have a red bar going across the center - maybe it was just on one that I've seen and somebody painted the center bar

I think it would look really nice with a black insert.

Good thought - may try that too. Assume you mean on the crossbar?
The grills on these 72's just need something!

I think the red bar you're referring to is the Ranger Grill. 1968 and 1969 grills had a grove down the middle that was painted red for Ranger grills and had an emblem in the middle with a plastic insert that said "Ranger". These grills were also used on regular 68's and 69's but without the red stripe.

YES - just found this picture - this is a 69 Ranger - was beginning to think I was "losin it"!!
To me - this is a much better looking grill than the 71-72's.

I like it. It gives it kind of a muscle car look. I think it would look really good with expanded aluminum to match the metal of the grill
