What kind of engine life should I be expecting. I had to replace my e4od torque converter at 105,000 miles if this helps as a hint of prior driving habits. I bought the truck off a relative of the dead owner, so I don't know what it was driven like before. The torque converter was put in right before I bought it. Regular oil changes at 3,000k both before and after I bought it. Mostly town/suburban road driving.
excellent maintence record, correct driving habits, you should expect at least 200,000miles with a good possibility of more. I work on these types of trucks with well over 200k and they still have as much piston psi as my 106k 302.
From what I have seen on this sight, the e4od tranny isn't that good.
I am not very familiar with 302's, as they weren't what I was looking for. I would suggest trying this post over in the 302 forum. The guys that hang out there might be a better help.
My gut is that if the oil is changed frequently and the vehicle isn't used for what it isn't meant, i.e. pulling a 6000lb gooseneck, that the small block motors typically last to 200,000 without a problem. I may be wrong, but that is my gut.
Check in the 302 forum and the tranny forum, they can answer the specific faults or goodies about your motor and tranny set up better than I can.
In my time i have seen 4.9 and 5.0 go well over 200,000,even 300,000. With regular oil change and air filter changes. The more highway driving the longer they run allso. Hope this helps.
My Dad had an '80 F150/4.9, an '82 F150/5.0, an '85 Bronco/5.8 and an '88 Bronco 5.0 that all had well in excess of 100K when he traded them in. They all still ran like new. I had an '85 Bronco/5.8 that had over 160K when it started having too much blow-by for my liking. Even though I'm sure it would have lasted another 10K at least, I opted to swap in a 340 HP Ford Motorsport 351. Zoom zoom.
My dad has an 88 club wagon with a 302, 256k miles, all we had to do was put crank and bearings in it, we think someone ran it without oil. But it will last him another 100k at least.
