I'm at the dealer now. Truck had MIL illuminated with P2285, rough idle, and engine surge. They tell me it needs a new ICP sensor (no kidding)!
-Anyone have access to repair manual(s), what's the labor (# hours) for ICP sensor and connector change (03 6.0L)? I thought I had read a thread that it was 1.5 hours, but I can't find the thread anymore.
-Also, does $150+ for PCM update (re-flash) sound excessive?
Thanks, wasn't expecting this to be a $1000 job.

Reason: Specify 6.0L Engine
I think that's high. It's not that hard a job to do. There's a thread in the tech folder with excellent instructions on how to change it, and yes $150 sounds high for a 15 minute reflash.
Walk away do it yourself look in the tech folder like partsman said. I did mine it is a pita but you can do it thread tells you what tools you need and has pics, which makes it special . And 1000 is way to much , sensor cost me about 150
Do it yourself. I did it on my 03 Yes it is a pita but you can do it. All the info is in the tech folder. partsguyed has it on his site for 108.00 part# 3C3Z-9F838-EA www.partsguyed.com
Thanks for the suggestions. I've seen the thread in the tech folder and there are other websites with good info to supplement that thread. Unfortunately, I'm backed into a corner--I can't get to it until Monday (at the earliest) and I need to drive my truck until then. Here's a summary of what they got me for:
$159 - Diagnose the problem
$267 - Parts (Sensor & Connector)
$390 - Labor
$50 - Misc supplies & HazMat disposal
They graciously waived the fee for the PCM update because there was an emissions recall that required it. All total, it came to just under $900. I'm pretty sure I could've done it for <$200. On top of this, they recommended the fan clutch (P0528) be replaced and the engine be decarboned (P2283). I think both those codes were due to the extreme surges caused by the ICP sensor failure. I guess time will tell.
I'm fortunate, I've had the truck for almost 8 years and this is the first time its been in the shop. Until now, it has only required small repairs and normal PM (I've performed all of it). I was a little disturbed when they tried to tell me I should have the fuel filters and air filter replaced. I replaced them not too long ago.
This is why I hate taking vehicles to the dealer. Thanks to the great men and women who contribute to this and other websites, I hope I can continue to keep it out of the shop.
I am having the same problem, just dropped the truck off at the dealer. They only charge $85 diagnostic fee here, and it's waived if they do the work....

Ahhh, salt in the wounds!
If you don't mind me asking, what dealer did you use?
As mentioned above, the Tech Folder has two great threads regarding doing the ICP sensor. Inside those threads are links to other threads on the ICP & its replacement.
Read enough of them with a notepad & pen beside you & you'll get a list of tools required, as well as a few tips and different takes on how to do the same job.
I'll be doing mine this Saturday. Hopefully my note taking will help me out.
I have an International dealer close to me so I got the parts there.
My truck is an early build 2003 so the part #'s are:
International Sensor 1845274C92 - $98.85 at parts counter
International Connector 1850712C92 - $20.65 at parts counter
There is a special tool mentioned in these threads which is a Snap-on item. "Ford ICP Sensor Socket S6196KR" - $36.
I may buy it if I can flag down a Snap-on truck before Saturday. In the threads I read, the folks who used it were happy they did.
If you don't mind me asking, what dealer did you use?

I use Texstar Ford here in Stephenville, TX. It's a smaller town and a smaller Ford dealer, but has "supposedly" one of, if not the best diesel mechanic in north Texas.
I know this is a part that's doable for the average joe, especially on the 06's (on the valve cover right?). I am having them fix it because I just got this truck a few days ago, and am having him give the rest of the truck a good once over. It's a small town, I know the service dept. manager, etc. etc. , so I trust them to not do me in. I've been doing business with them for years, and nave never heard a bad word about them from anyone else who does regular business.
I agree with High Bender, the disposal fee sounds like a crock of *****. Labor sounds high too...

I was told by Kristi (service dept manager, she has really short hair) that he is considered one of the best diesel techs in all of north Texas.
Their customer service there is great and they are all always willing to help. I used to go in and ask questions about my 97 f150 all the time and they would come out, take a quick look and give me a general idea of where to start. That, along with this site, saved me TONS of money!
I was charged
$150 for the ICP
$74 for the pigtail
rest for labor.
