And you have a great point, Chris!

This is why I asked. I completely understand the rationale behind removing the DPF, as the increased backpressure as well as the fuel required to regenerate makes the engine much less efficient than it otherwise would be.

But catalytic converters have been around for a LONG time. On gas engines there is no real benefit to removing them, as they don't really hinder much of anything anymore. Not sure about the DOC on these things though...

Most people here are angry about their trucks getting 15 MPGs due to the emissions controls required on '07+ diesels. I think this is much of the reason why most 6.4L owners think less than good thoughts about the EPA and their regulations.

they have.. SCR on the 2011.. cannot retrofit.. (but u can't retro egr or DPF on a 69 either)..

and its not a LOT of fuel compared to benefit.. you don't go to 1mpg when the regen is in effect.. just loose a 10th or 2. its a balance.. while spectacular at what they do, the engineers can only DO so much..

and there are TWO issues on fuel use.. if you turn off regen by itself, you don't really get any savings.. the biggie is to lean out the fuel/air mixture.. this is the key.. its what generates more power.. and unfortunately more environmentally bad exhaust.. as temps go up, NOx goes up too.. rich fuel keeps the temps down (comparatively) but drives the smoke up.. (thus the DPF job).. crazy mix of pros & cons..

just fyi, I don't NEED more power.. I WANT more mileage.. to get more mileage (10-20%) I HAVE to lean out the mixture AND remove the DPF.
but I WANT 200% mileage (I get 10 towing, want 20).. and that ain't gonna happen.. and towing is when you SHOULDN'T add the extra power (lots of head gasket problems in the 6.0 cause of this, not so much on the 6.4 but I don't have the cash to risk that too).

ahem.... before we get too far into these moral delimas of clean air vs. running out of fuel, lets stay focused. LOL! Any info on doc clogging up due to no more regens would be awsome.

fg25, I sent Jeff at Spartan an e-mail about this concern and he returned the following:

"Doing a DPF only delete is perfectly fine if you only plan on running the
lower tunes. It would take quite awhile running the 210 and under tunes to
clog the CAT. Really the only thing hurting you by leaving the cat on in
is the air flow restriction, which affects EGT's more than anything."

Hope this helps your concern, I'm still not sure what to do myself. I tend to keep my vehicles a long time, currently the GMC 1500 with 250,000 and a Nissan with 225,000. Both vehicles have been great and hope the Ford continues the trend. Reading other post it sounds like the 250 tune provides the best fuel mileage so I'm still concerned about the Cat failing on down the road.

thanks for the reply, that's really good to know. I don't think I'm interested in running anything over the 210 tune because I don't want hard shifting. I realize that my mileage improvements may be a bit limited by the lower tunes, but my main goal is to save fuel by not having regens. (wasting fuel out the exhaust and into my oil!) Also, I suppose if my doc became plugged sometime down the road then I'd probably get rid of it then. Thanks again, awesome info!

DPF delete

I finally ended up doing the DPF/CAT delete with dual exhaust out the sides. I went with the SCT Livewire and a cold air intake. All I can say is that it's incredible how my truck came to life. My Lie O Meter always read 14.2 give or take with the DPF on the truck. Now it's reads 20.5 give or take. The power and performance is amazing and I love the diesel smell! I know it's a personal and moral choice to remove the DPF, but I did it to extend the life of my truck and to extend oil changes. So, I'm saving fuel and oil, versus a little soot out of the pipes. It's an even swap in my opinion. Props to all of you on here who helped guide me to my decision. LEO.

that's a good point about extending the oil change interval, I hadn't thought about that one. Hmmm.... even more reason!

the Lie-o-Meter gets confused with the tuners.. so hand calc.. its probably more like 16-17 actual..
