Hello Forum This is my first post of many I'm sure. I wish I would have found this board a long time ago. I look forward talking with you guys and thanks in advance for any advice and tips. Anyways, to the question...
Is there anyway to tell if the anti-theft system is what is causing my truck to turn over but not start. I have already replaced the fuel pump, the fuse and relay are both working yet I cannot hear the fuel pump whirring when the key is turned on. I only have 1 key (the one with the chip that I've always used) I heard that the key itself can be damaged causing it to not read but is there a way to tell for sure if this is what's going on? I'd hate to call a locksmith out and this not be the problem. I look forward to any and all advice. Thanks again.
It also could be your starter the same thing happened to me you should crawl under and hit it with a hammer f that works then replace that we got a new starter cause we have the anti theft problem to it burned out the starter now we pick it up cost 115 for a new programmed key the dealership is the only place that will be able to fix it.
I'm guessing I would have to get the truck to the dealer to have the key reprogrammed?? Or is there anyway it could be done without the truck being there. It is a long way from my house to the dealership, it would be an expensive tow for sure. Thanks again.
I don't see why any one would replace a starter when the motor is already turning over .
The anti theft system will just shut down the fuel . If the theft lamp on the dash is flashing you have PATS problem . A dealer is not the only solution . Most GOOD locksmiths
can get you back on the road. Just call a few local and ask if they can handle this . It is most likely much cheaper than a dealer.
I had a similar problem on my '99 but it was intermittant. It turned out to be a loose/broken wire under the steering column(i think it was orange). The wire had pulled out of the harness plug and if the steering wheel was tilted/hit and it bounced the wire the right way, the truck would fire. I repaired the wire and no problems since. its a long shot you have the same issue but worth a look.
Thanks again for the replies. I have tried the inertia switch and the theft light blinks when the key is turned on then goes off. I finally got a new test light so I'll be able to find out where the power is going if anywhere.
Um, do you know what the difference between a successful (allows engine operation) and an unsuccessful (inhibits engine operation) PATS prove-out is supposed to look like?
