Hey does anyone know how much fuel a 7.3 goes through at idle? I've always heard 1/3 gallon an hour, but wondered if anyone actually knew. I realize I go through more beer an hour than my truck does fuel....
Maybe a gallon an hour?
How about a gallon in 2 hours? Close, but not quite.
In my testing(+ - 10%) our 7.3's consume 1oz every
1min 12sec, So round that down to an 1oz/min. And of
course we all remember our basic measurements and
that there are 128oz/gallon. So with that in mind it will
take 2hrs and 8min to use one gallon of fuel.

So you're saying I have to do a shot of beer every minute and 12 seconds just to keep up with my truck? Holy crap!! That sounds like an AWESOME drinking game!!!!!!!
Amount of Fuel Burned when Idling:
- at idle of 650-670 rpm, engine consumes about 1 1/3 (1.33) quarts per hour, or about 1/3 gallons per hour.
- at idle of 1200 rpm, engine consumes about 2 3/4 (2.75) quarts per hour, or a little over 2/3 gallons per hour.

I like Clint's findings. If in fact thats true being stuck on a snow covered impassable road or highway your good for about 60 hours idling. We've had people stranded on highways for a day or two last winter, just good to know if I'm out there.
