help decoding 460 engine and questions

i got a 460 engine from a 79 f250 4x4 so i know it isn't an original and was swapped in down the line. with that being said can anyone decode this engine for me and give me a rundown on what the letters and numbers stand for. also the specs of the motor HP/TQ output and other features that you can tell by the number on the block. also what year did the 460's run internally balanced and what years were they externally balanced? the engine block number i got off of the passenger side at the rear reads vertical number is D1VE-6015-A2B

I'd move this to the Big Block / 385 engine series forum a little further down the line....

D1VE block could be anything from '71-'78, just a casting number.
The head casting number will give you a better idea of what you've got.
External balancing started in '79.

thanks for the info i thought i might put this in this section because it's going in my 71 f250 4x4 and will have questions on what is needed for install and what kind of manual trans can i put behind it i want either a 4 or 5 speed. from what you said this would make it an internally balanced engine right? is it easier to mate a manual trans behind the internally balanced motor compaired to the external? from what ive read everyone doing a manual swap has trouble with getting the right external balanced flywheel/clutch problems. i will get the numbers off the heads tomorrow to post up try and give me a better idea of what specs it has.

Internally or externally balanced is the same with regard to mating the engine and trans. Flywheels are either for internal balance or external balance, not too much to go wrong there. Externally balanced will have a hatchet shaped protrusion on the spacer behind the harmonic balancer. You will have to buy an aftermarket mount kit to install that engine into a 71 4WD. Ford did not offer a 460 in a 4WD F-series until 1983.

I got the frame perches out of a 79 f250 4x4 that's what I got the motor out of I've been told 2 different things about them perches working some say it will make it pretty much a direct swap others say they won't work and will need custom mounts like L & L has can anyone clear this up? Also is there any zf5's that will bolt right up no problem to the 460?

'79 4X4 did not come with a 460 so the '79 perches are nil.
'90's ZF trans for 460 will bolt up to the motor.

may be dumb question but what is nil? also if i got a zf transmission would it matter if it was for a 2wd or 4x4? and the zf trans for a 460 would it bolt right up or will i need to mess around with getting the right clutch/flywheel combination or worry about any fitment or mating issues with the input shaft?

Nil means nothing. Those perches are useless for your frame.
If your truck is going to be a 4WD then you'll want 4WD related drivetrain parts.

Thanks for clearing up the question on the perches I got a lot of different answers some said yes they will work others said no and some said with minor work they will. Is the zf trans for the 460 made just to fit the 460 or are there multiple engines it bolts to will a zf from a 7.3 work or are they different bellhousing patterns?

another thing i'd like to ask is what exactly is the difference between the 2wd and 4x4 zf trans? anyone have a side by side picture for comparision? and would the addition of a 460 and zf trans in a 71 4x4 would it make me have a married or divorced transfer case? would i need a different transfer case maybe from the donor truck of the zf lots of questions options here hope this may help someone after i'm done with there swaps

L&L list the same 460 motor mounts for Dent and Bump side. So the towers should work. Worst case maby a little mod.
