Hi!
I am looking to buy a engine for my 66 fastback and have found this 351 engine that I have no idea of what year or type it is other that it is supposed to be a 351
I hope you guys can help me decode theese numbers:
-D1ZE-9431-AA ON ONE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND D20E-BA ON THE OTHER...
THE INTAKE SAYS -D1AE-9425-DA
AND ON THE BACK OF THE BLOCK THERE IS A STAMPING THAT SAYS 2B129715--
the way i found my 351 type was looking at the valve covers and the fuel pump. if the fuel pump bolts in with kind of a rectangular face going into the block then it is a modified. if it is kind of an oval then its a winsor. the valve covers have a hump on the front on the drivers side valve cover and the hump is on the back on the passenger side. that's the best way i can describe how i found mine was a modified. i actually found out when i went to change the fuel pump on a road trip.
Engine Identification (rev):
======================
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 12.7" wide the 351C is narrow.
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
-There are other indicators but these are enough to distinguish engine families.
COULDNT FIND ANYTHING UNDER THE VALVE COVER BESIDES THE DATE AND THE LETTER -F- WITH A CIRCLE AROUND IT....
Without block & head casting codes it's difficult to say for sure but if it's a 351 then it's most likely a Cleveland since the 351M wasn't produced until 1975 and the casting codes/dates you have found are all 1971. The foundry code on the head is actually a CF not an F with the C being part of the circle. CF stands for Cleveland Foundry which is where the 351C got it's name.
to find engine year and date of casting on a 351M/400,look at rear of engine next to the hole for the oil sending unit,there is a flat spot with some #s stamped in it,and on side of block down next to where motor support bolts up there is a # stamped in the block(ie: D1AE-6015-A2C , this is my block #) also this is the FORD part #,as I said earlier if its a 351C/M/400 ,the t'stat housing is cast into the block,351W is in the intake manifold...
