I am told that my injectors may be close to failing and my local shop wants $4,000 to do the job. My buddy and I are reasonable mechanics and we were wondering if this is a DIY proposition. how hard a job is this? Any input is appreciated (BTW, looked for a how-to in this forum and couldn't find anything).
What's the name of the shop? Might help others avoid the same situation.
Got a chance to meet up with Alan earlier today, super nice guy.
His truck is good to go. That shop was trying to rip him off big time. His truck runs good, idles good, and everything on the scan checks out just fine. Only thing I could see is that he's running a grey CPS, but even then the numbers weren't too far out of whack.
Figured I'd give everyone an update on this thread.

It's good that you don't really have to do this, but for the record, here is my write up.
Sorry, no pictures.

Really appreciate you taking the time to take a look at my truck Curtis. I feel a lot better about driving it now that the scan etc all checked out. It was good to meet you too!

It was Colorado Diesel in Castle Rock. The truck was in the shop having glow plugs replaced and they pointed out the looming injector problem when I picked it up - the guy told me he would be surprised if I got another 1,000 miles out of it. Shame really, as I have had good experiences with them previously.
BTW, something else these guys told me is that you should never run synthetic oil in a diesel and that the aftermarket Stancor GPR's burn out glow plugs quicker than the stock GPR. Thoughts anyone?

Did they also tell you that a virgin sacrifice will cure all your problems?
Great thread. It sure is nice to see outcomes such as this. Reps Sent!
My F-450 developed a skip last week. After reading about the grey CPS possibly causing issues with cylinders #3 & #8, I decided to change it out. Although I didn't replace it with a black one, I did upgrade it up to the dark grey/purple oring one from Ford. 35 bucks and the skip is gone.
Another question I have is whether there is an alternative to the Ford injectors ($354 each). I have looked around on the Internet and see a number of remanufactured units for around $150 or so. Does anyone have experience with any particular vendor for reman injectors? Also, Ford told me that the #8 injector is different to the other 7 but I don't see this mentioned on the reman sites - anyone know anything about this?
I got rebulit ones from injectorwarehouse.com
Another FTE member recommended them and now I do too. Easy to navigate website and yes #8 is different. Some people same use the same but previous owner of my truck did that and to me the different one made it a little quieter. Also Swamps stage 1 run about $150 each and they give you about three weeks to return cores before they charge you the VERY HIGH core charge. Return cores in time, no core charge. Good time to upgrade.
