Non powerstroke converting to powerstroke questions

Its been a cold week so ive been doing a lot of thinking and came up with a few questions. I am looking at purchasing a 1990 F250 with an e40d and a N/A 7.3 L with a what i think has a bad oil cooler problem. So it got me to thinking about buying this truck and putting in a 7.3L powerstroke and wondered what kind of things i might run into and have to change and if it is even worth it. I have been told of a place i can buy a good running powerstroke engine with everything minus turbo for $550. So thats not to bad in my book. I would have thought there would have been several threads on it but i havnt found anything. So what all would i have to change?

I would ask the same question here: 1994.5 - 1997 7.3L Power Stroke Diesel - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums
You would have to change the PCM (if it even bolts up) and I would imagine the main harness or modify and add to it. It is a heck of a project to enbark on, please let us know what you decide and how it goes.

It's doable but don't buy a powerstroke, buy the complete truck. All you need to do is swap engine/trans, PCM, add IDM, some other small parts, install dash from donor.

Sorry guys i need to clarify myself a little bit i guess. The truck im going to purchase already has a 7.3L Diesel but its a 1990 model which we all know is N/A. I would like to replace that motor is a true powerstroke with a turbo.

I know you can add a banks to a 1990 model diesel but their is someing about a 95-97 powerstroke that just purs like a kitten!!!!

I hope this helps with what i think might be some confusion.

That makes it even easier since the weight will be about the same and you can use the trans. You will still need to use the PCM/IDM and dash.

to convert the 90 from an IDI to a powerstroke, you will need to change the engine, complete engine bay and in dash wiring harness with computer, dash cluster, and you will also have to install a vehicle speed sensor somewhere because the powerstroke uses a VSS, the 90 uses a cable driven speedometer.
it can be done, but it would be easier and cheaper to just buy a running powerstroke powered truck if you really want a stroker.

if it was me, i would fix the oil cooler on the 90, and look for a used banks or ats turbo setup.
