Based on the smoke, it seems like GP's or injectors to me. I asked about the miss, mine is straight as well, and it sounded much like yours before new injectors.

Figured I would throw my hat in, I had the romps and loss of power sounded the same. Started adding a full bottle of antigel (which is way more then the label calls for) and changed my fuel filter since it was probably waxed up a couple of times. I have not had any issues so far. its been down to -40F up here in the great white North.

After watching your 2nd video.. I'm thinking maybe your GP's aren't working. After that many cycles of the GP's, I would think your batteries would have started to drain if the GP's were working properly. Maybe try & check it using Guzzles Instructions

Welcome to guzzle's Stancor GPR replacement Mod Web Page

I really like the GPR LED Mod for reasons like this. I was always fooled because the WTS light was on I assumed they were working & had no idea that my GP's weren't really working at all until I hooked it up.. Like I said in my previous post.. I had to plug my truck in last winter every night it was 40 degrees & below or it was a bugger to start in the morning. Now that I have the new GPR I haven't plugged it in once this winter & its started every time with only 30 seconds or so of the GP's cycling...(And we've seen nights below 0)

This is the guy that wrote the program for my PHP chip. Works great!!

I've heard through a second hand conversation from Dynomite Diesel in Monroe that oil changes are more important than a lot of people realize.
Basically change your oil every 3000 miles and your injectors won't wear out.
Double that mileage and you are doing good to make 80k out of them.

Wow! Kinda scary. I just figured my truck wouldn't run as smooth as it does if the injectors were bad. Hopefully I can get my new oil pump installed when the weather is still cold. If it fixes it good if not I will have upgraded and eliminated one more possibility. It's only money! Ugh! I do need to check the gp's and gpr, hopefully tonight I can do that.

does a cold start tune primarily increase injection timing to reduce white smoke?

Glad to hear it. I asked in another thread, but forgot to see if you'd responded. Thank you for the great feedback!

In most instances I would consider that true as well. My previously-owned 2001 truck had regular oil changes at 6K miles up until I purchased it with 62K miles. Once I got it, it got the typical 3-3.5K mile oil changes. I think the damage had already been done. 5W40 "fixed" it for 4 winters. According to the ex-wife, it's not doing so hot now with 140K miles. Oh well, not my problem now.

Both the aforementioned 2001 and my current 2000 run smooth as silk once the things are done throwing their temper tantrum on cool starts.

I have a friend that I do tuning for that has a 1999 with 180K miles. Old beat up ranch truck that has been nothing but neglected in every way. It misses pretty bad when cold, but it's not compression, fuel, or oil related....just worn out injectors.

What Cody and I had discussed is to increase the advance below 900 rpm below a certain temperature thresh hold.
Raise the rpm and it goes right back to a factory stock tune so the tune is very driveable.
It's only purpose is to enable injection timing at idle in very cold weather to try and control the smoke and it does the job.
One of the videos that I took compares the the stock tune and the cold start tune.
I'll upload it later on tonight, the work connection is too slow to try and upload during the day. (That is being remedied, signed up for Comcast Business class internet today. 12meg down and 1.5 up. )

I run 15W-40 all year and had that same issue when it dropped down to 9 degrees. I had to try about 6 times, but it did start unassisted with #2 fuel. Mine just smokes for about half second after start up on cold days. I just plug it in for a couple of hours and it starts up as quickly as on a summer day. Your truck sounds fine to me for a cold start, maybe not at 35 though. Change the GPR and I think you will be fine. You can drive it all year long. Just plug it in a couple of hours when the temp drops into the 20s or lower. That way you don't have to buy more expensive synthetic oil.

It's kind of a OT, but here is my stock tune compared to the cold start tune.
I have manual glow plugs and they are off when taking the video, so the smoke is heavier than if the GPR was switched on per the Ford design.
You can see at the end of the video that the tune does make a difference.

Man kind of wish I'd a thought the cold start and low power were both injector related. I'll have a hard time forking out another chunk after spending $700 on my hpop. Does anyone have a set of good stock injectors that I could try?

David I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, mine was romping at pretty much any temp below 50. I've got close to 190k on it & run the Delvac15w40 & it would romp on the first start of the day always so after all I've heard I'm pretty sure the injectors are pretty tired. I gave the (snake oil) Rev-X a try hoping I'll be able to R&R injectors this summer, lo & behold that joker has not romped since. I'm not saying the Rev-X fixed anything but I do believe that it's doing something for my situation. I'm gonna get Marty to hook-up the AE & make sure my ICP & IPR are doing what there supposed to be doing before I spring for injectors but as of right now that's where I'm at. IMHO the snake oil has been a good band-aid for mine.
