I just went out and cranked mine. It is 22 here now. Had to let the GP's cycle four times. Letting them cycle takes patience, 'specially when you are shivering. It romped horribly for a few seconds...when cycling the plugs, count slowly to a hundred or so.
I have to get Donna to count for me.........
Hey man. I had the romps when i first got my truck. When was the last time you checked your oil? When was the last time you changed your oil? Have you tried usingthe motorcraft or dieselkleen fuel additives? If it's shutting off like that do u have a fuel supply problem? I had the romps but my truck would shake from side to side but keep running. Maybe there are 2 issues here. Try an oil change I use Dino motorcraft. I don't mess around with synthetic it's way too expensive and I keep hearing about oil leaks if you switch over.
Mine will do the same thing if I don't use synthetic. I'm thinking injectors not firing when cold as well. If you pulled the valve covers and checked the oil spouts on the injectors when cold that would probably tell you if some injectors were not firing.
What doesn't make sense is why do I not have problems? I use dino 15W and have 302K on my sticks! All I have to do is wait for the WTS light to go out and then I crank it up... haven't even had to use the block heater this year! My Gp's and GPR are working like they should and even when I had no GP's, after the truck fired, it was just really loud, no romping. Has to be something here we're not seeing... I really wanna see some ICP numbers when cold (when the OP went to have some AE logging done, the truck was already warm).
Joe, you live in Houston and it's "warm" down there compared to here and it's "warm" here compared to other states, but you shouldn't have to cycle your GP's 4 times for it to fire. I bet either your GP's, GPR, or both are bad...

I agree.. Last year, I plugged my truck in every night on a timer. I finally determined my GPR was bad & changed it.. I haven't plugged my truck in once this winter & using the Rotella T5 Synthetic Blend my truck will fire right up 99% of the time after cycling the glow plugs 30 seconds or less..
Was 23 this morning when i fired up, let the wts light go out, counted to 10, truck started, romped bad, and died. Cycled it again, count to 10, started up, romped for about 10 seconds then smoothed out, i put in high idle and walked inside to let it warm up. Maybe not compared to rest of country but it was cold here all day long, 24 all morning and still 28 at 1pm, did not get above freezing until about 2pm or so and only reached a high of 34 or so. Got in the truck at 430, only waited for the wts light to go and fired right up no romps. How did yours do today david? Same as in video again?
Here is another attempt but it's in the 20s this time and you can actually see the tailpipe. Also when the tail lights come on that's when I've turned the key on. It is long but that's how long it took to get it started.
Man i feel your pain. That sucks. Is it like that every time it gets cold like this? Mine may romp from time to time, but there has got to be something wrong to have that much trouble starting. Wish I could help. FWIW, i was counting between cycles and on the cycle that it finally started is when you held out the longest, on average you were 10-15 secs from "ON" to "Crank", but that last time it was about 21 secs or so. Not sure if that has anything to do with the price of tea in china...
How much sweet talking you had to do to get her into getting out in the cold, still dark, and do the camera work for ya?
My 2000 does the same thing. It needs injectors badly at 235K but the oil change/maintenance on it was really sketchy for the last 190K. I also have 1995 with 236K on it that has had regular scheduled maintenance its entire life.....no romps.
It doesn't even have to be cold and sometimes it will do it. Well below 60's. She's ready to do whatever it takes to get me inside with her so if that ment her coming out and helping would speed up the process she was there!

Sounds like a deep thought........
Hard to tell from the video. You need to give more info. My questions would be?
Have you checked the gpr/gp's?
Batteries/Cables
Does it crank over good cold? Starter/batteries? Maybe pull the valve cover and see what the injectors are doing. IDK but good luck......I just put a band aid on mine with the synthetic oil.....
I'm gonna drive it to work in the morning and it's plugged in now so I'm sure it will fire right up but I'll post that. Obviously it's oil related and has to do with the cold. Someone made a comment about it sounding like a miss in the exhaust. My truck is straight piped and it seemes like other trucks from the past
Sounded like that. Maybe not!
