Did you try giving it 2-3 minutes w/ key on to energize glow plugs. Wts lite is only on for about 10 seconds but the gpr is actually energized for up to 3 minutes on mine when it is colder out( below 30*) Just curious if this helps any?
I say just switch to 5-40 until the problem rears it's ugly head then fix it because at this time it seems to just be speculation unless you start replacing parts to try and narrow it down.
I never thought the two would be related but (cold start and low power) my power has been an issue and I only get 10-11 mpg empty driving no faster than 70 and almost all highway. My truck has always felt like a dog especially on the top end. A 0-80 run at wot takes 35 secs with my 285's.

Mine does 0 to 80 in 20 seconds and that's with 3.73's and 315's... you know, you could always get Joey to test your HPOP and IPR, if that checks out alright, try O-rings, and if that don't
Fix it, then that leaves injectors I guess.
................... And for the synthetic fix I haven't had any issues like this with any of the powerstrokes we have at work. We have 8 total and mine is the only one that romps. I guess I figured 30's weren't cold enough for the syn.
Sounds like the romps....
Are all these trucks, including yours. getting fuel from the same source?
Not much smoke at all after start up, looking at what others have posted I would check the GPR, ICP sensor. Hope its not the injectors.
Here's another comparison. Left outdoors unplugged for @ 24hrs, -2F OAT.
Synthetic "cure" to some is a band aid to a problem, it will take care of it, but is also covering something else in my opinion. a couple years ago mine started romping like that and as soon as i switched to syn, they were gone that winter, but the next year, my injectors were in need of replacing, after replacing them since it was in the summer I put dino in, and haven't had the romps at all, not plugged in and its 5 degrees this morning. Just my experience of course, that's why I see some validity to the ICP.
I never have had to deal with the romps before, no matter what kind of oil is in the sump, and it get's into the 20 occationally where I live.

All my injectors dont fire in the mornings. it was 63 this morning in NC and mine smoked for about 3 mins and shook and missed. I dont think any GPs are working which leads me to believe that my problem is GPR related... I will be finding out this weekend.
It's got a new icp sensor on since about a month before the ipr. Remember the "injectors or hpop" never thought this cold start issue would be related. I should have the spr1 pump by this weekend. And that would rule out just about everything but the injectors! It's only money, thankfully I'm on this turnaround!

I am willing to bet that the issues are related.
I think I could go 0-80 pulling 8k in 35 sec..... that sucks big time
