Good Morning guys. Looks like the storm is staying out to sea! We may just get a break from the major stuff! Woo! (sorry pete)
mornin Josiah, for once, Im glad the storm is heading out to sea. we just got the driveway wide enough for 2 vehicles. although, i wouldnt mind helping my buddy do some more snowplowing lol.
yesterday felt like spring! I went by a bank sign and it said 50 degrees! holy crap a heat wave haha!
well, the only place to practice for motocross in the winter just collapsed 45 min ago.
It was Mototown USA in windsor Ct...it was the worlds largest indoor motocross track and now its just a pile of rubble. They were in the process of shoveling it off and they heard creaking and quickly got off the roof just as it fell. The only part of the building that is still standing is the Blimpie and dunkin donuts (but thats because they werent free span). Whats even worse is they hadnt even started to put a dent in the multi million dollar building cost.
Really stinks because i was planning on starting to practice there every thursday from this week till the first race in may.
What I don't understand is, why is melting making them cave? Its been two days since it precipitated. Why didn't it cave then? It didn't get any heavier since then, unless you account for the weight of the snow shovelers and their weapons of choice. Do you think them shoveling them is making them cave, by making the roof load uneven? Discuss.

hello guys, they must have cleared to much on 1 side of the roof. I cleared a gas station canopy over the pumps today and was careful to move back and forth to keep the weight dispersed evenly.
hello guys, My understanding is they were done entirely with the roof and if I had to guess as the the reason i'd say it was the weight of the removed snow pushing against the sides of the building. Could be they were not anchored adequately and pushed off whatever sill or foundation mount was there. Thats a guess from both a builders perspective as well as someone who has cleared 7 roofs in the last few days.
it was anchored, and very well engineered. there were no supporting walls really, just a bunch of massive steel beams solidly pinned into massive footings.the walls were just there to keep the heat in. 3 people including the owner were on the roof clearing snow when it started to groan and make other death noises, they ran to the storefront side of the roof and it almost immediately went down.
the big problem with these buildings coming down is the late response to getting the weight off the roof. how many storms did we have this year with no high melting temps to knock back the accumulation, and all these large buildings sat untouched. now they are dropping like flies and everybody is scrambling to remove the snow that has been rained on and frozen to concrete like consistency. 2 weeks ago after the large accumulation we had, the snow was easy to handle and could have been removed from the rooftops safely. a lot of people missed that golden opportunity only to see their house, shed, or business crushed.
