hey guys, I was wondering how far gone is too far gone on floor pans for our trucks?
I knew the floors were pretty soft when I got this truck but today I was playing around with it and pulled up the rubber mat and insulation and the floors are pretty much gone. mostly on the far sides of the cab(i think the windshield has been leaking for a long time).
where are all the places I should be concerned about replacing? any recommendations on replacement parts? I found a place close to me called certifit that I can go to their warehouse and pick up pans for $35 a piece.
I'll post up some pics tomorrow to help show what im dealing with.
It's more from rust from water/salt underneath, and built up water from under the mat either from spilled crap, condensation and leaks. Not likely the windshield, but the cowl, windshield wiper mounts and heater core.
I have a 79 F250 supercab. It has the same rust problem. I got my floor pans from LMC truck. The driverside is in, the passengerside hopefully will be by the end of the week. Luckily I have access to a welder.
Floor pans are obvious...now what you need to have close look at is,did the rust get up the side panels. You need to have something to weld to there. Thats is where you have to get creative.
Dont forget to leave the drain channels on your cab mounts clear of any welds. From the looks of it your going to need new cab mounts and now is the time to do it.
Get some weld thru primer to coat you parts before welding them in. Use seam sealer on everything you welded in.
If you are not going to take it that far...when you cut out the old pans make sure you leave some of the original metal near the side panels to weld to.
When I had mine apart I put rust prevent in a pump up sprayer and shot it in every nook and cranny I could get to. Take the plugs out of the doors and remove the headliner. Then you can spray the RP down into the cab corners and bottoms of doors, and front pillars.
Those cab mounts actually don't look bad. You'll be able to tell more when you get the old floor pans off. It also looks like most of the rocker panel on each side is OK. The floor pan width may be cutting it close to weld back to the rocker, but you should be OK, but you won't know til you get the pan laid out. Get the rust cut out first and then see where you are at. You may have to add a bit of "filler metal" but shouldn't be too big of deal.
