Installed some cab lights today...
A few weeks ago I snagged a set of cab lights from the local wrecking yard so I figured I would get them installed today. Installation was pretty straight forward, remove both A-pillar covers, visors and overhead console to allow access above the headliner to run the wire harness and tighten down the nuts. I figured the hardest part is laying out the location of each hole so I made sure to make a template from the donor vehicle after the lights were removed.
I know everyone likes pics so here they are.
Please feel free to PM me if you want the full size pattern in .eps or .cdr format.

That's awesome,I have a set of recon cab lights that my wife got for Christmas for that's sitting on my toolbox. I need to get my butt in gear and get those lights installed.
Nice job!!!!

So how does one get that template in the proper size for our trucks?

Great job. I love my lights too. It's a little unnerving punching holes in the truck but it's worth it. I like the full size template idea on butcher paper, I just measured a whole lot of times using the same dimensions but only crafted a template for the three holes for the individual lights.
If you can't find a harness from a suitable donor vehicle, then you can use a harness from any type of truck (XLT, XL etc). All you have to do is disassemble the connector, push out the terminals and then install them into your existing connector behind the kick panel. There will be two vacant spots on that connector that has power. I can send you some photos if you would like.
I have the pattern drawn electronically. If you have the means, the pattern can be plotted using a large format printer. You will have to PM me so I can send you the electronic file in full size. I have an .eps or .cdr file. I suppose I can also provide a .dwg file for those who have AutoCAD. Anyway, with one of these files, you can print full size if you have a plotter. Do you have one of those printers? If not, then send me a PM and I'll get a pattern out to you.

) After it was all over, they came over and admired the look. I suspect there will be cab lights in their futures as well.
Your lights came out nice too. I think it was your post that gave me the guts to try it myself. Thanks!
Thanks you very much for the reps!
You can do what I did. Find a truck at your local salvage yard, remove the lights and make your own pattern. All you have to do is tape some paper over the cab and then make a rubbing. If you have a little bit of dirt/sweat on your hands, it will make an impression where the holes are. You can also use a marker from inside, but a rubbing works best.
Then lay the paper on a table and trace over the rubbing marks to make the holes easier to read and you are good.
I also made a rubbing of the windshield and the fluted rails on the top of the cab so I could have as many points of reference as possible.
Nice truck you have there by the way....I have a fond spot for OBS trucks.
Judging by the interest in the template, I will go ahead and plot out a dozen patterns or so. Just send me a PM with your address and I'll mail them out at the end of the week.
Does anyone know if the Recon lights require the same size holes and spacing? Chris (kupaa), can you check this out for me please? If not, then I can add locations for the Recon lights to the template then it will work for OEM or Recon lights.
Clay, if you happen to see this thread and are interested...I would be happy to send you some patterns so you can include them with any of your new orders for cab lights. Just toss me an e-mail and let me know how many you think you need. (unless of course the Recon lights already come with a template....)

Ken, do you have the overhead console? If so, then your electrical connector at the passenger kick panel will be occupied. Assuming you are using an OEM wiring harness for the lights....you will want to find a donor truck that has the overhead console as well, then you can just swap out your existing harness with the new one that has the wiring for the lights integrated in the bundle.

I will rep you when I can! Guess I need to take a trip down to the wrecking yard.
BTW, I figured out how to make a pdf file of the template...
